Good morning, dear teachers and students, The title of my speech today is “Reading opens the doors of wisdom; great books create noble lives.” Wisdom is said as a hidden ability or energy in people’s life. It is like a golden bell hanging in our souls, while book is the hammer that hit the bell and the fire that ignited the lamp of wisdom. Like the old sayings goes: “Reading makes a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man.” “Studies serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability. Their chief use for delight is in privateness and retiring; for ornament, is in discourse; and for ability, is in the judgment and disposition of business. For expert men can execute, and perhaps judge of particulars, one by one; but the general counsels, and the plots and marshalling of affairs come best from those that are learned.” Ji Xiaolan’s outstanding wisdom is inseparable with his hard working and diligent thinking during his childhood. He began to read when he was four years old. His harsh learning and willing to learn finally led to his erudition. Suhomlinski once said: “ Reading kindles the sparks of wisdom, so I decided to read everyday. I would like to keep books as my companies for my whole life time as a stream that will flow forever and enrich the river of mind.” I always keep this quote in my mind. Our school advocates Scholarly Campus and we have Book Society, which offered a platform for us to read. However, have you ever gone to the reading room or the library? Have you ever read aloud in the roads of campus? If not, why don’t you start from today and be a lover of books? It is beneficial to open books, especially the good ones. So we should not just read books but chose the good ones to read. Goethe said “The reading of all good books is like a conversation with the finest men of past centuries.” Good books can be a lifelong time companionship. They make people become intelligent, strong, and mature. “There lies a glassy oblong pool, where light and shade pursue their course. How can it be so clear and cool?  For water fresh comes from its source.” Several lines from the poem spoke the pleasure and benefits that we can gain from books. Doesn’t our mind like the pool and the knowledge in our mind like the water in the pool? Only by constantly acquiring new knowledge can we keep up with the time and prevent the water from being contaminated. I like reading beautiful articles as well as famous works. I always have to many to read when I stay in the thick book verdant forest. I love searching the charming of Hundred Schools of Thought; I love the flow of Sentiment in the poetry; I love deeply immersed in the classics as well as hanging around in the garden of foreign literature. Reading, like roaming in vernal spring breeze, makes me feel fresh and cool; like tasting good wines, leave me with an endless aftertaste; like listening to the conversation of noble men, clears up my confusions. Keep books as your compainion and you will enjoy a better life. That’s all my speech. Thank you.
