B In American English, there are various expressions which originate from animals. Today, we will research into words and their stories. Let’s talk about wolf. Wolves are important animals in the traditions and stories of America. Before the Europeans arrived in north America in the 1500s, to native Americans, wolves often meant being brave. However, in English, wolves are not to be trusted. Perhaps wolves attacked too many people or ate too many farm animals. Whatever the reason, wolves were killed in many places. So many died that they almost became endangered. They also became known as bad animals. To begin with, there is an expression lone wolf. If we call somebody a lone wolf, he isn’t a bad person, but he may like to do things by himself. In fact, he sometimes makes you think he doesn’t want to be around people because he dislikes them. Now, let’s move on to the home. Parents tell their children not to wolf down their food. In other words, the child eats too quickly and without care. And if someone says a child was raised by wolves, that child has bad manners and is behaving like a wild animal. By the way, there is a popular expression about wolf from a very old story: a wolf in sheep’s clothing. A wolf in sheep’s clothing describes someone who acts and looks nice on the outside but is bad on the inside. It tells us not to be fooled by appearances. 5. What can we know after reading the passage? A. In different areas and times, wolves make people think of different things. B. Only in American English can we expect to find expressions about wolves. C. Wolves are dangerous and should be killed in order to protect other animals. D. Nobody lived in north America before the Europeans went there. 6. Make many friends with people around. D. Go to see a movie on his own after school. 7. Which of the following expressions can be used on a student who often breaks school rules? A. Wolf down. B. A lone wolf. C. Raised by wolves. D. A wolf in sheep’s clothing. 8. Where is it possible for us to find the passage above? A. A science report. B. A book for travel guides. C. A program for English learning. D. A magazine on trade and business. C It was a freezing cold morning, just a couple of weeks before the New Year. Travor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as usual. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone. The bike was a black 18-speed Kona. Travor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries, saving us from having to walk long distances from where we live. We relied totally on the bike to go out for work and life. I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a complete stranger would go out of his way for someone he has never met before. People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so, This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity(人性) as a whole. And it has influenced us to be more mindful of ways we can share with others too. No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting. 9. Why was the bike so important to the couple? A. It was their only possession. B. It was a nice 18-speed Kona. C. The man’s job was hike racing. D. It was their only transport. 10. We can infer from the text that _________. A. the stranger found the bike B. life was hard for the young family C. the couple worked 60 hours a week D. people were busy before the New Year 11. What do the couple learn from their experience? A. Strangers are usually of little help. B. One should take care of their bike. C. An act of kindness can mean a lot. D. News reports make people famous. 12. From the story, we can see humanity is _________. A. kind B. selfish C. honest D. indifferent D A family whose members have dedicated their lives to denim(牛仔布) innovation has brought Candiani and the whole fashion industry to new heights by creating the first fully biodegradable(可生物降解的) stretch denim. Alberto Candiani, the current owner of Candiani, created the first fully bio- degradable jeans using a plant-based yarn(纱线) obtained from natural rubber. Once the innovative denim came to life, a brand-new pair of jeans was put to the test by being buried in forest land for six months. At the end of that period, Candiani’s team discovered the fibers had almost fully broken down into tiny pieces. The new technology is called Coreva. “These garments(服装) are extremely endurable, but at the end of their life, you could send them back to us and we recycle them, or you could fertilize(施肥) your vegetables with them,” Alberto Candiani said. Jeans—one of the most popular garments worldwide—generate an environmental impact that has become a real global challenge. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, it takes around 2000 gallons of water to make a typical pair of jeans. And during production, around 71 pounds of carbon dioxide are released. That is equal to 53 seven-minute showers, driving a car 78 miles. What’s more, most jeans are produced with stretch denim made with plastic, which can take hundreds of years to degrade. But by creating a circular model in which fabrics are biodegradable at the end of their lifecycle, tons of garments can be prevented from ending up in landfills(垃圾场). Candiani has not only achieved this by going plastic-free, but the manufacturer(生产商) has also reduced water use by 75 percent and the use of chemicals by 65 percent. Although Candiani creates a product that is about double the price of traditional denim due to the higher labor and manufacturing costs involved, business is booming. Not only has the company increased its production, but its motto of “the greenest mill in the blue world” can be trusted. 13. What highlights Candiani according to paragraph 1? A. It has a great founder. B. It is a family-run business. C. It makes jeans at a lower cost. D. It creates biodegradable jeans. 14. What do we know about the innovative denim? A. It can be recycled. B. It can last for six months. C. It can take the place of fertilizer. D. It turns into soil under the forest land. 15. What are the figures in paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The popularity of jeans in the world. B. The possible reasons for global warming. C. The complex process of manufacturing jeans. D. The environmental effects of producing jeans. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 We all want to accept and love ourselves.
