Each parent from her class insisted that she cast their own child as Snow White. This reminded me of my seventh grade musical — “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.” I desperately wanted to play the role of Becky, the female lead who was Tom’s girlfriend. ____1____ For starters, Becky had to sing numerous solos, and I couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket. I also didn’t have long blonde curls like pretty Linda Wright who won the part. I was assigned the non-singing role of Miss Watson, the Maid. I had to wear an ugly dress. And I had only one line to learn, “That’s what I say.” ____2____ Miss Watson was onstage in quite a few scenes, and got to repeat “That’s what I say” throughout the play. At last, our production was put onstage. Imagine my surprise when Miss Watson made the audience laugh out loud each time I piped in with “That’s what I say.” I hadn’t known that she — or I — could be funny, or that her character was important in moving the plot along. ____3____ That night, I began to understand that being the star may not be any more fun than being a stand-out in a supporting role. Each person, onstage and backstage, is essential in theater. Without everyone doing their part, the play would be dull as dirt. ____4____ If everyone’s a star then nothing gets done. It’s all noise and chaos. And so I believe all children should get the opportunity to play Miss Watson, to become someone they didn’t know they wanted to be. ____5____ A.So it is in life. B.It was not to be. C.It was anything but a great part. D.My Miss Watson turned out to be a hit. E.It took the entire cast to make a good show. F.There was an advantage, in my opinion, though. G.I would hope all children could be a hit in life. B (2023·江苏苏州·苏州八校联盟高三适应性检测)Searching for a new cat to add to your family? If your home already has a cat, you may wonder how your cat will welcome a new partner. ____6____Continue reading for tips on how to do that. Your existing cat’s needs come first. ____7____Does your cat prefer female cats over male cats? If he/ she enjoys the company of female cats, adopting a female cat can help. If you adopt a young kitten as a companion for your older cat, it can work well as kittens get along with a cat of any age. Shower your existing cat with extra attention. Cats can be territorial when it comes to their space; the same can be true for their owners as well. ____8____Giving your cat more hugs and care during the introduction of a new cat can help ease his/ her bad feeling. This also helps your cat accept and trust the new one more quickly. ____9____ When you bring your new cat home, it’s best to keep the cats in different rooms. This way they won’t try to defend their territory. Each should have their own space with bowls and cat furniture so he/ she don’t feel the need to compete. And do spend time with the new cat as he/ she can also be stressed in a new environment. Introduce the new cat slowly. Your cats will have the chance to get used to each other’s smell through the door. When they seem interested in meeting, you can bring one into the other’s territory._______10_______If you notice either of the cats getting uncomfortable, separate them. A.Separate the cats initially. B.Make sure your cat feels at home. C.Do this at least a few days after the new cat arrives. D.Think about your existing cat’s personality and habits. E.Your cat can get envious of a newcomer easily if feeling ignored. F.Give both cats a special treat when they first meet to encourage peace. G.There is a process to make the change less stressful for both you and the cats. C (2022·浙江金华·校联考一模)I know that facing uncertainty at work can be stressful, particularly in the current economic climate. While I don’t know the particulars of your situation, I can provide some general advice to help reduce the chance of being laid off. Start by demonstrating your skills and value to your company. ___11___ Meanwhile, show your talents on high-priority assignments. Provide regular progress updates on the financial impact directly related to your work. And share your accomplishments with your directors. ___12___ Next, take steps to make sure you are seen as vital to your clients. Often employers consider the impact layoffs will have on customer relations. ___13___ However, it may leave a lasting impression on management and colleagues who may be very helpful in your future career. ___14___ To prepare for a layoff, take practical steps, such as updating your resume (简历) and LinkedIn profile to highlight any promotions, new skills, projects, and educational achievements. Make use of your network on LinkedIn and other virtual platforms to connect with people in your field. Financial preparations are also strongly advised. Review your budget and cut it where you can. ___15___ Make sure you know the requirements for unemployment in your state as well as the anticipated benefit amount so that you can work that into any budget plans. And if possible, consider applying for new opportunities. A.It will allow you to increase your savings. B.They may not be aware of all that you’ve done. C.A layoff may come as a shock to any employer. D.While you plan for the best, prepare for the worst. E.Of course, these steps may not always prevent a layoff. F.One of the best ways to do that is by growing your skills. G.This may mean volunteering for tasks that others don’t want to do. D (2022·浙江湖州·校联考一模)How to stop glasses fogging up with a face mask Wearing a mask keeps you safe during the pandemic, but it come with its own set of challenges. And, one of the biggest drawbacks of wearing a mask is how much your glasses fog up and affect your vision. Taking off your glasses to wipe them clean each time it fogs up is not only frustrating, but it can also increase the risk of infection. ___16___ Here are some tricks to stop it. Twist your mask strings. From the side, once you twist it, the strings will look like the figure eight. This is great for stopping fogging because it redirects your breath by putting slight downward pressure on the top part of the mask. ___17___ This may leave you infected by virus. ___18___ If you wash your glasses with soap, this creates a thin film on your lenses which limits fogging. Use a fragrance-free soap and mix it with warm water. Put your glasses in it and let it air dry. When you wear your glasses next, soap molecules on your lenses should block fogging. Use tissues. You can put a tissue under the top part of the mask. ___19___ To do this DIY trick properly, you should fold a tissue in half and place the straight edge along the bridge of your nose. Change the position of your masks and glasses. ___20___ But if you do this there are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, you need to make sure that your mask still covers your chin(下巴)after you pull it up. And, if your prescription is stronger, this trick could impact your vision and cause increased blurriness. A.Put glasses in the water. B.Wash your glasses with soap. C.It will help catch air and damp, keeping your glasses free of fog. D.So the key is to prevent or minimize fogging due to face masks. E.Cover your chin with masks to prevent need for repositioning when talking. F.Though, it’s worth noting that it does create a slight gap between the mask and your face. G.Pull up your mask and draw your glasses down, blocking your breath from rising upwards. E (2022·广东·华南师大附中校考一模)Your house may have an effect on your figure. Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. ____21____ Here are some ways to turn your home into part of your diet plan. ____22____ Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less self-conscious when they’re in poorly lit places — and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness. Mind the colors. ____23____ In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it’s time to repaint, go blue. ____24____ People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal. Downsize the dishes. ____25____ We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tail, skinny glass. A.Slow down while cooking. B.Don’t forget the clock or the radio. C.Open the curtains and turn up the lights. D.Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. E.Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. F.They depend on how much time you spend designing. G.You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. F (2022·江苏南京·校联考模拟预测)The Spotlight Effect Have you ever felt as if the entire world was watching while you made a mistake? Well, here’s some good news: it’s likely that no one even noticed. ____26____We have this experience not only when we make mistakes but also when we perform well. Every time we do something that is a little different from what we usually do, we may assume that everyone around us will notice. The spotlight effect might happen when we make a mistake in a game, have a bad hair day, or give a terrible answer in class.____27____In these moments, it feels like everyone is watching. The spotlight effect exists because we all get used to seeing things through our own eyes. Every person is the main character in his or her story, and the events of our lives seem to have great importance.____28____ The spotlight effect is a very common part of the human experience. However, in some cases, it can lead to extreme social anxiety and nervousness around other people. Everyone suffers some degree of social anxiety. We all care about what others think, and we all want to be liked. It’s normal to wonder about what effect we have on other people.____29____If someone is so nervous that they can’t make good decisions, then it’s time to take action and improve the situation. Learning about the spotlight effect is important because it can help us reduce our anxiety. Next time you feel like everyone is staring at you, remind yourself that it’s just your mind playing tricks on you. ____30____If you fill your mind with thoughts of your friends and family, it will help you be less self-conscious. A.However, this can be a problem when the anxiety is too much to handle. B.That’s why fewer people notice the embarrassing circumstances they encounter. C.Another good exercise is to make an effort to notice the people around you, rather than focusing on yourself. D.The spotlight effect is a trick of the mind that makes us believe that people notice us more often than they really do. E.What you can do at this moment is to ignore them. F.We are so busy examining ourselves that we actually observe very little about everyone around us. G.It can also appear when we score a big goal, ask someone on a date, or do a good deed. G (2022·广东·惠州一中校联考模拟预测)If you’ve ever been bitten by a mosquito, you know how frustrating their bites can be. ____31____ , creating an itch (痒) that once you start scratching only seems to get worse. Why does a mosquito bite itch and what can we do? Why does a mosquito bite itch? When a mosquito bites you, it pierces the skin using a special mouthpart to suck up blood and injects saliva (唾液) into your skin. Mosquitoes’ saliva has lots of proteins in it, some of which our body recognizes as foreign, and our immune cells spring into action to try to fight them. ____32____ . It’s actually the body’s response to the foreign mosquito protein it is trying to fight. That’s why some people may only have a mild reaction to bites, while others, more sensitive to the foreign protein, react with large areas of swelling that are more painful. What helps resist the urge to scratch? “Don’t scratch” is the advice that most experts and health professionals give. As hard and sometimes unrealistic as it can sound, scratching inflames (发炎) the skin, and the inflammation makes the skin itch more. “ ____33____ ,” warned Daniel Markowski, technical adviser for the American Mosquito Control Association, adding that in extreme cases, people can scar themselves. Instead, there are dozens of creams and sprays that promise itch relief as well as home remedy (疗法). Choose what’s right for you can often come down to trial and error. In general, all of the various anti-itch creams are very similar. There is no scientific evidence these remedies work, and they can come with their own precautions or side effects. ____34____ . ____35____ Some people can have serious allergic reactions to mosquitoes, although in practice it is rare, Vosshall said.
