Aanalysis of Three Pieces of Writing
According to the persuasion-scientific argument continuum, the first and the second sample are both scientific, and the third sample is both scientific and emotional.
The first sample, Narrowing the Wealth Gap, achieves credibility by factual and logical analysis. The article can be divided into three parts. In the first part, the author makes an introduction of the economic situation in our country. Then he points out the problem we’re facing: the accelerated widening of the wealth gap. At last he offers some possible ways to solve the problem.
The writer succeeds in telling the audience of the unfair distribution in China with the help of solid facts. For example, the Gini coefficient in China, at 0.48, has far exceeded the alarm level of 0.40. He then concludes that a systemic reform on a large and complex scale should be carried out. After some logical analysis he offers a three-step solution to the problem. The evidence is sufficient and I will be persuaded if I were the intended audience.
The second sample, Is China Overtaking America?, also achieves credibility by factual and logical analysis. The writer first mentions the rising of Asia, then he raises the question—will China surpass the US? After taking many aspects into consideration, he comes to the conclusion that China will not necessarily surpass America. Though many of his supporting details are personal opinions, they’re logical and objective. At last he appeals for cooperation rather than hostility.
In the third sample, Ease People’s Tax Burden, the writer raises the topic with a specific example. He then proves that people are really under high tax pressure with some supporting evidence. At last, he appeals for a transparent tax system and tax reduction and refund.
