高一英语Word power In learning English, we may often come across pair nouns and group nouns. It is very important to know how to use them in an appropriate way. In this part, you are given the opportunity to enlarge your vocabulary by learning some words about archaeology. And some exercises are designed for you to practise and reinforce the new vocabulary you have just learnt. Try to expand your vocabulary as well as your knowledge and apply your new knowledge practically. Step 1: Brainstorming 1. Now please form groups of four and discuss what pair nouns and group nouns mean. Try to use your own words to explain? (Pair nouns usually refer to people or things that exist as a pair, e.g., a pair of shoes, a pair of glasses, a pair of trousers. Group nouns therefore mean people or things as a group, e.g., a team of football players, a herd of cows, etc.) 2. Discuss with your partner and then report to the whole class what you did last Sunday by using some pair nouns and group nouns. Sample answer: Last Sunday my family went shopping in the department store. In front of it, a group of fashion models was showing the new collections for this year. I went to get a close look at it, but the crowd was too big. In the department store I bought a pair of gloves, two pairs of trousers and a pair of boots. Pair nouns and group nouns 1. Read the short dialogue on page 46 first, and then read the brief introduction to pair nouns and group nouns. Compare their definitions with the ones here. Try to find ways to improve yours. Read the first tip box. Do you know how to use pair nouns? 2. Now read the second tip box carefully. Be sure to understand what each group noun given here means. You may consult with each other or the dictionary to know how to use them. 3. Look at the pictures in the exercise on page 46 first. Read the instructions carefully and label the pictures. Finish all the exercises as quickly as possible. Sample answers: a bunch of flowers a pair of glasses a flock of birds three pairs of boots four packs of playing cards a pair of socks a herd of deer a swarm of bees a team of footballers/boys a pair of earrings Step 2: Vocabulary learning Words related to archaeology Suppose you are an archaeologist and you have just got news that an ancient tomb is discovered. What would you take with you? And what are the items used for? Look at the following chart. Discuss with your partner and report your answers to the whole class. What to take What it is used for Step 3: Vocabulary extension 1. Go over Part A then finish Part B individually on page 47. Answers: B (1) Archaeology (2) archaeologist (3) sites (4) archaeological (5) discovering (6) explored (7) dig (8) brush (9) record (10) remove 2. Form groups of four and read the instructions for Part C carefully. Each group must choose one subject as your topic. Make sure all of you participate in the discussion.
