Show the pictures of some actions and ask some individual students to say a phrase: start to rain mop all the water up crash into a tree fall from a tree lose the game etc. 2. Ask some individual Ss to say some sentences with the past continuous tense. 3. Ask a S: T: Is a rainstorm terrible? S: Yes, it is. T: What about an earthquake? S: It’s (more) terrible. T: Yes. It destroys everything on the earth and even kills people. We should learn to protect ourselves and help each other during the earthquake. Do you know what everything is like during the earthquake, and how to protect ourselves? Let’s read an earthquake survivor’s home page. (write “survivor” on the Bb and explain) Step II Reading This activity includes pre-reading, during-reading and post-reading. 1. Read the article for the first time. Have the Ss read the story by themselves as quickly as possible and find the words and phrases they don’t know and underline them. Then show the following sentences with new words on the slide and go through sentence by sentence with the Ss. (1) I felt a slight shaking through my body. (2) People in the shopping center looked each other in fear. (3) Some people screamed because they were very frightened. (4) Then the real noise came, like bombs under the ground. (5) People ran in all directions. (6) People were running wildly while pieces of glass and bricks were falling down. (7) I calmed down. (8) A moment of fear went through my mind but I told myself to calm down since I was still alive. (9) They were in a great hurry to move away the bricks and stones. (10) I saw the bright daylight.
