Owning a Car in a Big City (Sample)
Today, people’s living standard is improving rapidly. As a result, a lot of people in big cities have cars of their own, and there are still more people who are planning to buy cars.
There are some advantages in owning a car in a big city. First, a car allows one to move more freely. One can go out whenever he likes. Besides, a car makes it easier and more comfortable to travel. With a car, there is no need to wait for the bus in the cold or under the burning sun.
However, too many cars in big cities will bring about some problems, too. First, it may cause more traffic jams if the road conditions have not been improved. Second, more cars will result in serious air pollution. What’s more, parking will be a problem since there are not enough parking spaces left in large cities. In a word, if conditions permit, owning a car can make our work more efficient and life will become more enjoyable for us. But we still have a lot to do if we want to encourage people to buy their own cars.

Parental Hopes and Personal Ideals
All parents hope their children will have a bright future. However, parents’ expectations for their children are not always in accordance with their children’s personal ideals, and sometimes they are even conflicting with each other. This is often a main cause for quarrels and gaps between parents and children. But what lead to the conflict between parental hopes and personal ideals?
The following three factors contribute to the conflict. First of all, in this fast-changing society, parents and children have too many differences in mind. Secondly, traditional patriarchy is still influencing Chinese parents in modern society. They are used to making decisions for their children. Third, nowadays young people have strong independence, who want to plan their own future and control their own destiny. Thus the conflict between parents and children inevitably appear.
In order to solve the conflict, both parents and children should pay their efforts. For one thing, parents should give their children rights to make their own decisions. They may help their children make choices instead of replacing them to make choices. For another, children should learn to respect their parents’ advice since parents tend to have more life experience. Besides, to communicate with each other actively is necessary to their understanding each other. As long as both parents and children learn to think from the other side’s point of view, the conflicts between them can be avoided.

How to keep healthy for college students
Health consists of both physical health and mental health. A person who only has physical health may not only hurt himself, but also hurt others, while a person only has mental health may not have the power to send his ideas to others. When someone has both physical and mental health, he can make the society more beautiful.
Nowadays, College students’ all-round health has become a hot issue in our nation, because our nation’s further development depends on the youth and only if they are healthy can our nation keep fit.
Then how can we become all-round healthy? I think we should do as follows:
First, in order to achieve physical health, we should form a good living habit. Eat more and more fibrous food, fruit, raw or boiled green leafy vegetables, and do morning/evening walks, exercise, yoga, swimming, dancing etc.
As regard to achieve mental health, I think we should have a kind heart and good temper so as to tolerate every thing and every one. You should read good books to learn more things in order to figure your own character. When you are able to forgive the person who has ever hurt you, and also bring happiness to both yourself and others, you are healthy mentally.
To be a person who has both physical and mental health, we should not only have a proper living way, but also have a kind heart. One thing to notice is that these two terms are also interrelated to each other. Only when you have good health, you will be happy. And only when you are happy, you have the vigor to keep yourself healthy.

1.大学生了解社会的必要性。
2.了解社会的途径(大众媒介,社会服务等)。
3.我打算怎么做。
Getting to Know the World Outside the Campus
With the development of our society, the campus is no longer an “Ivory Tower”. It is necessary for college students to go outside to get to know the world. They should acquire knowledge not only from books but also from the society. Thus they can adapt to society more quickly after they graduate from school. Science and technology are developing rapidly with each passing day. Most students can keep themselves informed by watching TV, listening to the radio, reading newspapers and using the internet. It’s also good to take a part-time job, such as tutoring, or working in a restaurant. Any of these will enable students to get in touch with society.
The World Expo will soon be here. I’ve already enrolled to be a volunteer to help others. I think I can do a good job. Although I might not be paid, I can learn a lot about society, which I think is even more important.

Directions: Write a passage in about 120 words entitled “Caring for the Elderly”. You should base your composition on the following outline.
1. 随着中国人生活水平和医疗水平的提高,我们身边的老人越来越多
2. 作为他们的子孙后代,我们应该更多地为他们做些事情
3. 这么做的意义
VI. Writing (15分)
Caring for the Elderly
With the ever-rising living standards and the rapidly improving medical quality in China, elderly people begin to take a larger proportion in our population. What should young people—their offspring—do for them?
Generally speaking, we need to awaken the whole society’s care for the senior citizens. Specifically, we may take into consideration their convenience in designing public facilties, provide them with more cultural programs, and set up new clinics near residential quarters to secure both their psychological and physical health, etc.
Aging is a natural process, and we’ll be old one day. Taking good care of our seniors means taking care of ourselves. More significantly, how well the elderly are respected and attended reflects a society’s moral standards and degree of civilization.

1. 有些人认为好运是很少的;另外有些人则认为人人都有机会获得好运。

VI. Writing (15分)
My View on Good Fortune
There is no consensus of opinions among people regarding good fortune. Some people believe that the chance of obtaining good fortune is rare, while some other people insist that good fortune is open up to everyone.
As far as I am concerned, I partly agree with the latter one, because no one is destined to have good fortune. It just goes to those who can creatively and patiently struggle for it, and avoid those who claim that they were born to fail or win in the pursuit of good fortune without realizing how much inner strength and potential they have. Let take Helen Keller as an example, she showed great courage and unconquerable spirit in fighting against “bad fortune”, and finally achieved her “good fortune”, being awarded the President Medal of Freedom.
In conclusion, I believe firmly that the so called “good fortune” is worthy of pursuing rather than just waiting for.

Directions: Humor is often regarded as a best cure. Discuss the function or importance of humor according to your personal experiences. Please write a composition entitled “To Add Humor to Our Life”. (at least 120 words)
VI. Writing (15分)
To Add Humor to Our Life
A sense of humor, God’s greatest gift to mankind, is universally considered the most valuable personality asset. It is born within every person’s heart, but has to be cultivated. A person without humor is just like a spring without flowers, a dish without seasoning. To some extent, your personality lies in your sense of humor.
Humor can enhance physical as well as mental well being. It helps us bear our burdens, lessen our tension, overcome our frustration, relax our body muscles, and dissolve countless trifles and irritations. With the cracking of a joke, all our worries, sadness disappear, and we are full of vigor once again.
Humor helps us live in harmony with others. It is unavoidable to have misunderstanding and tension with others during work and study. But humor can ease these problems quicker than angry words or quarrels. With it you can always keep on good terms with others.
A sense of humor is really one of the keys to happiness. It gives fun and zest to life to make it worth living.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay entitled Electronic Dictionaries Are No Good. You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below given in Chinese.
1. 很多学生喜欢使用电子词典
2. 使用电子词典的缺点
3. 如何正确使用词典
Part V Writing (20 points)
As the enthusiasm of learning English grows, more and more students are fond of using electronic dictionaries instead of the regular ones. They think it is more convenient to press some keys on the machine.
However, constant use of such electronic device may cause side effects. First, electronic dictionaries do not contain as much information as a qualified dictionary complied by authorities of the field. Besides, some explanations in them are so simple that they can certainly cause misunderstanding. Worse of all, a lazy attitude towards language learning is always most inefficient in the long run.
My suggestion is that a learner should have a good dictionary on hand and treat the electronic dictionary as a makeshift because an electronic dictionary assists one in time but a regular one can help one more. Only with this approach can one improve a great in English study.

1. 有些人认为政府应该给予航空研究更多的投资。
2. 有些人对此持相反的观点,认为在目前地球上仍有大量问题需要解决的时候,政府已经在航空研究中花费了太多的财力。
3. 我认为……
Part V Writing (20 points)
Human beings never stop exploring new things. Space research is one of the most important and one of the most costly explorations in the scientific field.
Some people think that the government should spend more money on space research. First of all, we might discover extraterrestrials on the other planets or unknown spheres in the universe, the study of which will be extremely help to our scientific development. In the second place, faced up with the global population exploration, the possibility of finding another suitable planet for people to live will solve this problem smoothly.
On the contrary, some people argue that the government has spent too much money on space research while there are still a lot of unsolved problems on the earth. These people believe that the government should give priority to these problems over the research on space. After all, money is limited and it should always be spent wisely.
As for me, I think the government should balance the relationship between the problems on the earth and the space research. People’s immediate need should always be met in the first place, while the exploration of the space should also not be neglected as it is for the long-term interest of human being. We should make sure that the limited money is spent equitably on the two aspects to benefit human beings in the end.
