Unit 2 We haven't found life on other planets yet.
■ Warming up
Is there life in the space? Is there life on other planets?
Where does life come from? Does the Earth life come from the space? These are some of the questions we are going to answer in this unit. Now go to page 20.
■Reading and vocabulary
1 Look at the picture and make a list of words you’ll see in the passage.
On page 20 there is a picture showing the universe. What can you see in the picture? Look at the picture and make a list of words you’ll see in the passage.
scientist, spacecraft, planet, solar system, spacecraft space, message, information, star, universe, send
2 Read the passage and choose the best title.
On page 20 is a passage without a title. Now read the passage and choose the best title.
1 Anyone out there? 2 Life on Earth
3 Our solar system 4 The stars at night
alone billion million planet solar system understand universe
Now let’s go on to read the passage. While reading try to cut(断句)/ the sentences into parts, blacken(涂黑) the predicates, shade(加影) the connectives and underline (划线)the expressions.
Now write all the expressions in your Expression Book.
on Earth, for millions of years, find life on other planets, go around the Sun, the solar system, at night, more than, in the galaxy, the Milky Way, in the universe, a long way away, send lots of spacecraft to look at other planets in our solar system, in space, send sb. a message, send information to sb.
3 Check(√)the true statements
There are 8 sentences on page 21. Ome are true, and some are not. Now read them and check(√)the true statements.
1 The Earth is a star. (√)
2 The Sun is a star. (√)
3 There is more than one galaxy. (√)
4 Our galaxy is part of the Milky Way.
5 The light from stars has taken a long time to reach us(√)
6 Scientists have found life on other planets.
7 They’ve received many messages from space
8 They’ve visited most of the universe.
Now correct the false:
Number 4 is wrong. The fact is: There are more than 200 billion stars in our galaxy, the Milky
Way, and our Sun is only one of them. Not our galaxy is part of the Milky Way.
Number 6 is wrong. The correct is: Scientists haven’t found life on other planets yet.
Number 7 is wrong. The correct is: They haven’t received any messages from space.
Number 8 is wrong. The correct is: They haven’t visited most of the universe.
■Writing
4 Look at the cartoon picture and answer the questions.
1 Where has it landed? (Mars)
---It has just landed on Mars.
2 What has it discovered? (people)
---It has discovered people.
3 Why haven't they sent us a message? (can't hear us)
---Because they can’t hear us.
4 Why haven't they visited us on Earth? (prefer life on Mars)
---Because they prefer life on Mars.
5 What have they made with the other spacecraft? (TVs, radios, cars)
---They have made TVs, radios and cars with the other spacecraft.
5 Write the story.
Writing can be fun! Now let’s have a try!
We've just had some news about the mission to explore Mars. Scientists have just said that there has been life on Mars for millions of years. Mars is a planet and it goes around the Sun.The Sun and its planets are called the solar system. The solar system is a small part of our galaxy. Mars we see at night is a long way away from us. But scientists have discovered it for many years. It is a long way away and its light has travelled for many years to reach us. It is hard to understand how far away it is from us. Scientists have sent many spacecrafts to look at Mars in order to understand
it better. So far lots of information has reached us about Mars.
