Background information: The students have known how to greet each other and to use simple present tense of the verb to be.
Type of lesson: New lesson--- Integrated skills
Teaching aims and learning objectives:
a. To learn new words: dancing; swimming; age; looks; cute; hobby; glad
b. To learn to catch the information from the listening text
c. To develop students to listen, to speak, to read and to write
d. To let students be full of self-confidence
Teaching Contents: Integrated skills
Focus of the lesson and predicted areas of difficulty: To make passages according to the key words
Teaching aids: charts; record and multimedia
Teaching procedures:
Step 1: Free talk
a. Lead-in: Quick answers
Ask the students some greeting questions one by one and let them answer them quickly.
Hi! Hello! Good morning/afternoon/evening/night! Goodbye! Bye-bye! Bye! What’s your name? You’re Millie, right? How are you? How old are you? Are you a doctor?...
(Purpose: Review the greetings which we learned in this unit.)
b. Revision: Yes or No questions
Is our school big? Are you a boy? Is Mr. Chen in the office? Are you in Grade 7? Is Millie’s hair long? Is Millie good at swimming?
(Purpose: Revise the grammar of last lesson and lead to the information of this lesson.)
Step 2: Pre-reading
a. Presentation
Millie are happy to make some new friends. Let’s meet her new friends. Then take out the charts Kitty and Amy: Read Part A1 and answer: Is Amy’s hair short? What about Kitty?
What do they like doing？
(Purpose: Read in silence and catch the information we can learn before listening.)
b. Learn the new words.
Put the charts and write the information of two people on the blackboard, then teach the words “hair; age; hobby; looks; cute”
Such as, age: Mille is twelve years old. Millie’s age is 12. Yao Ming’s age is…
hobby: Millie likes reading. Millie’s hobby is reading. Jack Zhou’s hobby is…
looks: Is she fat? Is she slim? Is he beautiful?
cute: Take out a toy rabbit, and ask “Is it cute?”. Cute means lovely.
(Purpose: Let the students learn the new words in the language environment. )
c. Read and circle.
(Purpose: Try to use the passages to circle the known information in the table.)
Step 3: While-Reading
a. Listen to the listening text twice and circle the rest information, then check the answers.
b. Try to make short passages about people in the class
For example: This is Yao Ming. He is 33 years old. He has short hair. He is tall and strong. He is good at playing basketball.
(Purpose: Try to make sentences and pay attention to “am, is, are”.)
c. Complete the notes according to the table information.
Give the students a few minutes to prepare for the notes. Then check the answers. Read it at last.
(Purpose: Try to write the passages according to key words.)
Step 4: Speak up
a. Presentation
Millie is happy to finish the notes. Her cousin Andy comes to meet her. They meet Kitty. Kitty doesn’t know Andy. Do you want to know Andy?
Explain: cousin: the child of your father’s or mother’s sisters or brothers
b. Listen to their conversation and answer the question.
Question: Is Andy in Class 7?
(Purpose: Listen to the tape with the question.)
c. Read after the tape and find out how Andy and Kitty greet each other.
Read the conversation one sentence by one. And find out “Glad to meet you.”
Explain: glad: happy, nice
(Purpose: Let the students imitate the pronunciation.)
d. Discussion
Make similar conversations like Part B in groups of three. Then act it out.
(Purpose: Let the students practice the knowledge in the daily life.)
Step 5: Homework
a. Try to write something about your best friend.
b. Try to make similar dialogues with your classmates.
