Alexandria was a city by the ocean and its commercial life depended on commerce and fishing. However, the coast around Alexandria was flat and it was ___30___ for the sailors to find their way to it. One day, when I was in college, a dishonest-looking character approached me in the student union with a leather jacket he wanted to sell. It was a beauty: buttery smooth cowskin, with artfully sewed lines and long leather fringes (穗).

We’re all human, which means that sometimes we do things we shouldn’t do or say things we shouldn’t say. Sometimes we realize too late that our actions have been hurtful to somebody else. When these hard times occur, the best response --- the only response, really --- is, “I’m sorry.”
Admitting a wrongdoing, as soon as possible and frankly, helps the other person begin to heal. But just as important, it cleans up our own soul and sets us free.

The title “First Lady of the United States” is given to the wife of the nation’s president. The duties of most First Ladies have included arranging and attending social functions, such as state dinners. As the president’s wife, the First Lady is in a highly visible position. Therefore, her behavior can make her a role model. She can change people’s thinking by supporting a favorite cause. The First Lady also has access to influential people, including the president. Many First Ladies have used their position and skills to draw attention to social and other policies, and sometimes events have forced a First Lady to take an outstanding role in leading the country.
After a serious disease limited her husband’s ability to move, Eleanor Roosevelt worked tirelessly representing her husband. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt began his office during the Great Depression (1929-1933). Both he and his wife cared deeply about helping the unemployed and providing relief for the needy. As First Lady, she went to places he could not go, traveling widely and reporting to him what she saw and heard. She visited complaining retired soldiers and coal miners; she also inspected government relief projects. During World War II she travelled abroad as America’s goodwill ambassador (亲善大使).
Believing that it was vital to inform the public about the president’s and her own thoughts and actions, Eleanor Roosevelt was the first presidential wife to hold press conferences. As First Lady, she gave lectures and radio talks and wrote articles. She began writing a newspaper column titled “My Day,” which shared her views on social, political, and other issues. Thousands of people wrote to her, asking for help. When she could not answer a letter personally, she forwarded it to the proper government agency to answer.
