Chapter 1 of Junior 8A. Water
Lesson Plan
Teaching aims and demands:
1. Language knowledge
a. Some describing words that is connected to water
b. New words and expressions
c. The uses about describing amounts
d. How to use ‘How many’ and ‘How much’ to form a special question
e. The way of expressing the uses of water between groups of students

3. Water is important. Tell Ss to get into the habit of saving water.
Main and difficult points:
1. Ss should be able to describe the uses of water and the water cycle.
2. Ss are expected to use graphs or bar charts to show how amounts change.
3. Ss are expected to improve their reading, listening and speaking ablities.

Step1 Warming-up and lead-in
Brainstorming: How much do you know about water?
This is a warm-up activity aiming to motivate students to think. If students are active in class, it’s not necessary to let students open their books and do the exercise on P2. Teacher can only use these statements as cues to prompt the students. Otherwise, just choose the right choice for each statement.
Encourage students to think by asking:
• Where can we see water? (ppt8-13)
• Can water change form? (ppt15-17)
• What can we use water to do? (ppt19-25)

Some suggested facts:

• People need water to drink every day.
• Water comes from oceans /lakes /seas.
• Water falls down as rain.
• Water goes into people’s house through a tap.
• Water can change into a solid when the tempreture is below 0℃.
• Water can change into a gas when the tempreture is over 100℃.
• Flowers and trees need water.
• You can use water to wash your face and brush your teeth.
• Water can be used in other drinks.
Step3 Go on with while-reading
1. Understanding the reading passage.
1). Answer the following questions after listening to the tape about Para1-4
a. What was Daisy doing when a voice spoke?
b. How did she feel when she heard the voice?
c. Why did the voice sound angry?
2). Listen to Para 5—13, tell the way the water came into Daisy’s house and went back to the sea.

2. Lead Ss to read the whole passage and tell them an efficient way of getting the main idea of each paragraph.
Synopsis by paragraph:
Para 1. Daisy is brushing her teeth with the tap running.
Para2-4: The water tells Daisy to turn off the tap and she is alarmed.
Para 5-9: The water tells Daisy about its long journey from a cloud in Yunnan to the
Dongjiang River, to a reservoir, to the water treatment works.
Para 10-13: The water tells Daisy that it will go to a sewage plant and then into the sea
again. It remind her that the water is valuable.
Para 14-16: Daisy tells Benny that she was talking to the water, and Benny thinks she is
strange.

Step 2 New lesson --- Listening Practice
1. This part is not about water, but follows the same idea of having an inanimate object talk to us about its life history. In this case , a coin tells us about its adventures. Play the tape once for students and ask the students just to listen to the coin’s story.
2. Listen to the coin story for the second time and ask the students to number the pictures.
Tape script:
1). Hi! I am a one-yuan coin! I was born in a mint. I was lovely and shiny then. I was with lots of other coins.
2). They put me in a bag and took me to a bank. I sat in that bag at the bank for a few days.
3). Then a bank clerk gave me to a customer. He needed some coins for his shop.
4). The man had a cake shop. A woman bought some cakes. She gave him 50 yuan and he gave me to her as part of her change.
5). That woman put me in her purse. But later, she dropped her purse on the ground and I fell out. She found her other money, but she did not find me.
6). I stayed on the road for a long time. I got very dirty. Then an old man found me. He was very happy to see me!
