1. used to意为“过去经常；以前常常”，仅用于过去时，后接动词原形，表示过去的习惯或状态（现在已不存在），它的否定形式为used not to或didn’t use to，疑问句形式为Used +主语+ to…?或Did +主语+use to…?。 be used to doing意思是“习惯做某事”to后的动词只能用动名词。 be used for doing和be used to do都是use的被动结构，意为“被用来做某事”，前者强调状态，后者强调动作。
2. be terrified of = be afraid of (doing) sth.意思为“害怕(做)某事”。
3. so much time意为“如此多的时间”。So修饰名词时，该名词必须被many, much, few, little修饰。
4. 疑问词+ to do，这一结构是动词不定式的一种形式，多充当句子的宾语和主语，特别是作宾语可以转换为宾语从句的结构。例如：
I don’t know where to go tomorrow.= I don’t know where I will go tomorrow.
5. I go to sleep with my bedroom light on.我开着灯睡觉。句中on是形容词，意思是“开着的；接通的；工作着的”，反义词是off，常与be连用。例如：
Don’t keep the computer on.不要让电脑一直工作着。
The film has been on half an hour. 电影已经放了半小时。
6. afford常接在can, could, be able to之后，表示“有足够的（钱，时间）做某事；担负得起（……的费用，损失，后果等）”。例如：We can’t afford (to buy) a new house. 我们买不起新房子。
7. give up意为“放弃”，后常接名词、动名词；代词只能放在give之后。
8. to one’s surprise意为“令某人惊奇的是……”，常作独立成分，一般来说，其后出现一个句子，可以转换为be surprised that+从句。相关搭配有：be surprised at sth.对某事吃惊， be surprised to do sth.对做某事吃惊，in surprise吃惊地。例如：To my surprise, he passed the exam. = I’m surprised that he passed the exam.使我吃惊的是他通过了考试。
9. pay attention to意为“对……注意；留心”，后接名词、代词、动名词或从句。

13. even though=even if尽管，即使，虽然。引导让步状语从句，在复合句中不能与but同时出现。

三、阅读理解。
Morgan Rees has always been a good businessman. He used to own three petrol stations and was busy most of the time. When he was 65, the normal retirement age, he decided that he didn’t want to stop, so he carried on working for another two years. Finally, when he was nearly 68, his wife, Dolly, asked him to retire because she wanted to enjoy their old age together. Reluctantly (不情愿地), he handed over the business to his son.
But he was unhappy. He didn’t know what to do with himself. Although he read a lot of books and he went on holiday to interesting places with his wife, he was bored and began to get depressed (变得沮丧) because he hate being retired.
