Fors ome, this feeling is quickly overcome as they adapt to a new environment; for others the change takes longer and sometimes appears as homesickness. If you are homesick, you might notice an increase in: Low energy or motivation. Trouble sleeping. Increases/decreases in appetite. Having difficulty with school. Increased use of drugs or alcohol. Lack of interest or involvement in new surroundings. CAUSES The distance from home—the farther you go, the worse it may be. Unhappiness when things are different from your expectations of student life. You have finally arrived at college after working toward it for so long. A heavy workload. Students who are homesick often feel they have no control over their environment. WHAT MIGHT HELP? Keep in good contact with the people you have left behind, but also give yourself time within the university to begin to get involved here. Be realistic about what to expect from student life and from yourself. Set up a balance between work and leisure. If work is proving too difficult, you may need to improve your study skills or your organization of time. Remember to get enough food and sleep! These affect you emotionally as well as physically. Make contacts and friends through shared activities such as sports or other interests. If you stop being able to do normal social and academic things, seek professional help either from your advisor or dean or the counseling service. 1、What might be a sign of feeling homesick? A.Feeling like quarreling with someone else. B.Becoming interested in study than ever before. C.Finding food or fruit less attractive. D.Participating in almost all activities in college. 2、New college students might be homesick because ________. A.they are never far away from their parents B.they feel upset about something unexpected C.they suddenly do not have anything to do D.they do not like the university they are in 3、Which of the following measures might be helpful for homesick students according to the text? A.Keeping their old friends left behind. B.Reminding themselves to keep busy and forget it. C.Forcing themselves to stay in their dorms on weekends. D.Going in for sports with their friends. 22.(8分)How many times do you check your Facebook page in a day to see whether your latest post has got another “like” or “thumbs up”? Although you might be embarrassed to admit how many times you do this, don’t worry —-- psychological findings have shown it’s completely normal. In fact, the pleasure we derive from receiving a “like” is equal to that of eating chocolate or winning money, and we can’t help wanting more. According to the findings, which observed 32 teens aged between 13 and 18, the feedback circuit in the teens’ brains is particularly sensitive, and the “social” and “visual” parts of their brains were active when they received “likes” on the social network. The research also showed that though the thumbs up might come from complete strangers, the good they derive from them worked all the same. So, does it mean we should try our best to win as many thumbs up as possible? Not necessarily so if we know the reasons behind our desire for attention. In “why do people long for attention” by M. Farouk Radwan, he explained several cases in which people naturally longed for attention. Radwan said people who were an only child, who were used to being the center of attention in their house, may try to copy these conditions. Feeling “overlooked and unappreciated” might also lead you to long for attention. Other times, the state of being jealous or wanting to cover your mistakes may also contribute to such longings. In fact, too much desire for attention can create anxiety, and in turn ruin your happiness even when you get it. So what can we do about it? The answer is quite simple. “If people could adopt goals not focused on their own self-esteem but on something larger than their self, such as what they can create or contribute to others, they would be less sensitive to some of the negative effects of pursuing self-esteem,” wrote psychology professor Jennifer Crocker. So perhaps the answer to our addiction to “likes” is simply to focus on something larger than ourselves —-- a hard, but a worthy one. 1、Which of the following can replace the underlined word “derive” in Paragraph 2? A.deliver B.give C.prevent D.get 2、What’s the reaction of receiving “likes” on the social network to the brain? A.The brain becomes more nervous. B.Some parts of the brain are active. C.The brain becomes less sensitive. D.The brain becomes cleverer. 3、Who wants to get more attention according to the passage? A.the only child. B.The old who lives happily with children. C.The young who feels anxious. D.Teens who want to discover their mistakes. 4、What’s Crocker’s suggestion about the negative effects of getting self-esteem? A.Doing an interesting matter. B.Working harder than ever before. C.Having a bigger goal than their self. D.Not checking your Facebook page in a day. 23.(8分) Young people in the United States do not have a strong understanding of the world and their place in it. Two US-based groups, the Council on Foreign Relations and the National Geographic Society, conducted an online survey last year. They wanted to know what young people in American colleges knew about geography, U. S. foreign policy, recent international events, and economics. The survey was given to over 1,200 Americans between the ages of 18 and 26, all of them presently attending, or having previously graduated from. a 2- or 4-year college or university. The average test score, out of 75 total possible answers, was 55 percent. The study identifies a few important problems. For example, only 30 percent knew that the only part of the U. S. government that can declare war is Congress. Only 60% of those taking the survey could identify Brazil on a world map. “Part of the problem,” argue the organizers of the survey, “is the Internet.” They say it is becoming harder to find high-quality information about world events among all the fake news and trivia (琐事) which swamp (淹没) the web. Forty-three percent of those questioned said they read about the news on Facebook. Another problem is that most college courses do not require students to learn about international issues. If such information is not required, Richard Haass from the Council on Foreign Relations said, then the United States could have leaders like Gary Johnson. He was a recent presidential candidate who did not know about the Syrian city of Aleppo when a reporter asked him about it. The survey results were not all bad. The young people also demonstrated a good understanding of climate change and renewable energy. And the majority of them said that international issues were becoming more important to them. Haass says these findings suggest the need to find ways to get good information for students, both in school and online. To help, the Council on Foreign Relations is creating a new program called CFR Campus, designed to help build knowledge about global issues. 1、What do we know about the survey? A.The participants were all recent university graduates. B.It was an online survey conducted by two US universities. C.It was given to over 1,200 American people aged from 18 to 26. D.It aimed to find out what the young people know about America. 2、What’s one reason the organizers of the survey give for young people’s lack of knowledge? A.The poor quality of the US university system. B.Young people’s unwillingness to travel abroad. C.The sources from which they gel their information D.Their lack of interest in knowing more about the world. 3、What topic did the young Americans understand best according to the survey? A.Government organizations. B.Geographic information. C.Foreign relations. D.Environmental matters. 4、In which part of a newspaper could we find this article? A.Economics. B.Education. C.National Politics. D.Entertainment. 24.(8分)2017 TFK Poetry Contest Calling all poets! TIME For Kids has a challenge for you: Write a funny, rhyming poem.
