Unit3 What were you doing when the UFO arrived? 主备人: 时间: 执教人: 教学目标: (一)知识目标 单词和短语 : Words : barber shop , bathroom , accident , earth , silence , playground , around , strange , kitchen , modern , follow , experience, amazing, climb, anywhere, take place, World Trade Center, run away, hear about, come in, get out, take off. (二) 能力目标 学习过去进行时态以及when、while引导的状语从句,并能用过去进行时态叙述过去发生的事。 (三)情感目标 激发学生探索大自然奥秘的兴趣。 教学重难点 1. 过去进行时态以及when、while引导的状语从句。 2. 过去进行时态的概念、构成及其用法。 教学方法: 1)Task-Based Language Teaching 2) The cognitive approach   3)  The oral approach 教学媒体: 多媒体,录音机 投影仪 课时分配: Period 1: Section A(1a---Grammar) Period 2:Section A 3a---Section A 4 Period 3:Section B 1a---Self-check Period :4 Reading 教学过程 Period 1 Step 1 Organization Exchange greetings with the Ss. Duty report: It is between two students. They are having a dialogue. Enjoy a clip of film about the UFO Step 2 Revision 1.Show four animation pictures on the screen After showing the pictures, ask: ----What is Peter’s mother doing? ---She is cooking. ---What is Peter’s father doing? ---He is watching TV. ---What is Peter doing? ---He is sleeping late. ---What is Peter’s brother doing?. ---He is getting out of the shower 2. Lead the students into the real situations: Ask one boy student: What are you doing now? The student may answer: I am listening to you. Ask the whole class: What is he doing? The whole class answer: He is listening to you. Repeat this with one girl student. Practice with the whole class, trying to revise the tense with different personal pronouns. Step 3 Leading in: introduce the past continuous tense to the students 1. Ask one student (student A) to leave the room and wait outside the door Then ask two students to do actions, one (students B) is writing on the blackboard and the other (student C) is drawing a picture. They keep doing it without stopping until I ask them to stop. 2. Ask student B: What are you doing? Student B answers: I am writing on the blackboard. (Write the sentence on the blackboard as blackboard work) Repeat this with student C, write: I am drawing a picture 3. Ask the student outside to come in and sit down. Then ask the two students who are doing actions sit down too. 4. Ask the first student who was writing on the blackboard. Ask: What were you doing when (student A) came in? Help him to answer: I was writing on the blackboard when he came in. (Write I was writing on the blackboard as the blackboard work) I say to the class: He was writing on the blackboard when (student A) came in. Ask the class to repeat this sentence. 5. Repeat this with the second student who was drawing a picture. (Write I was drawing a picture ) 6. Ask some other students the question: What were you doing when (student A) came in? Then students ask and answer in pairs: What were you doing when (student A) came in? 7. Point to the blackboard-writing( During my teaching above, I have written it on the blackboard step by step). Help them to find out the differences between the two pairs of sentences. Tell the students: Today we are going to learn a new tense ----the past continuous tense. Introduce the past continuous tense. I am writing on the blackboard. I was writing on the blackboard when A came in. I am drawing a picture. I was drawing a picture when A came in.. 8. More practice about continuous tense. 9. Comparison : make a comparison between the two tenses. 时态 现在进行时 过去进行时 用法 表示现在正在进行的动作 表示过去某个时刻正在进行的动作 结构 is/am/are + doing was/were + doing 例句 I am having an English class I was having an English class. Step 4 Section A 1a 1. Show a picture of all kinds of UFOs and ask Ss: What is UFO? Do you know? Help Ss answer: Unidentified Flying Object 2. Show a picture of all kinds of aliens and ask: What does the alien look like? Ss answer according to their imaginations. 3. Show a picture (the picture on page 18) on the screen. Tell about the picture with the students. Say: A reporter was asking some people “What were you doing when the UFO arrived?” If you want to know what they were doing. Please open your books, let’s look at 1a. please look at the picture and match the statements with the people in the picture 4. Pairwork : Where were you when the UFO arrived? I was in… Step 5 Section A (1b). 1.In order to transit from 1a to 1b naturally. I say: Would you like to know what the reporter was asking? Now please look at the picture and listen to the reporter’s questions and circle the correct responses. 2. Pairwork: What were you doing when the UFO arrived? I was…ing when… 3. Listen and repeat. Step6 Section A (1c) 1.Pairwork A: Where was the girl when the UFO arrived? B: She was in front of the library. A: What was she doing when the UFO arrived? B: She was standing in front of the library. 1. Ask students to ask and answer in pairs Step 7 Section A (2a) (2b) 1. Look at the picture in 2a and tell what the alien did after he arrived at Center Street. Ss answer according to the phrases beside the picture. 2.I say: Please listen and find out what did the alien do first and what did he do next. Put these phrases in order. 2.After Ss finish it. Check the answer. 3. Work on (2b) Listen again. Complete the following sentences with “when” or “while”. Then check the answer. 1. Listen and repeat. 2. Ask Ss to look at the four sentences in (2b) carefully and try to find out the different usage of when and while. 3. Give a summary of the usage of when and while. . while当……时候(后面跟的动作延续,多用进行时态) when 当……时候(后面跟的动作不延续,多用过去时态) Step 8 Section A (2c) Look at the picture .Say what each person was doing when the UFO landed. Make sentence with “when” and" while A: What was the girl doing when the UFO took off? B: While the girl was… C: When the UFO took off the man was… Step9 Survey Ask your two partners what they were doing at these time yesterday. Time(yesterday) you Your partner 1 Your partner 2 7:00pm     8:00pm   9:00pm     They should report their survey result to the class. Step 10 Summary (After the students go through the four tasks, it is the right time for me to help them sum up the usage of the past continuous tense. Step 3 Section A (3a) 1.Listen and read the e-mail message 2. Read carefully(精读).Collect different information and write some on the Bb . Explain them simply. 3. Number the pictures in the correct order. 4. Answer the questions. a) What kind of experience did Ted have on Sunday? b) What was he doing at around 10:00 in the morning? c) What happened(发生) then? d) Was it strange? e) Who got out? And what did he do next? f) What did Ted do when he saw that? g) What did Ted feel when the alien went into a souvenir shop? h) What was the alien doing when the shop assistant called the police? i) What did the alien do before the police arrived? j) When did Ted call the TV station? k) Isn’t that amazing? (2b) Listen again and write the letter of who did each thing in the chart. Play the recording again if Ss don’t finish the work. 4. Correct the answers. Step5 Section B (2c) 1. Talk about the people in 2a.student A begins a sentence with “while”. Student B completes the sentence. A: While John was walking to school B: While John was walking to school, he saw a cat in a tree. C: While John was climbing the tree…………….. Step6 Section B (3) 1. Talk about the picture. Ask Ss what they see in the picture. Help Ss say “ a suitcase and a cage”& “a woman with glasses” Ask “Where is the woman?” Ss answer “ in a train station” 2.Read the article and find out how many Adverbial Clause of Time introduced by when and while. 1. Read again and find the answers to these questions. 1).What was Linda doing when Davy ran away? 2). Why couldn’t Linda see Davy? 3). Where was Davy while Linda was looking for him? 4). What happened while Linda was on the telephone? 5). What was Davy doing when Linda finally saw him? 2. Explain some difficult points if possible. Step7 Section B (4a) Use pictures to tell a story, using the past continuous tense 1. Ask some questions about the pictures and let Ss answer. 2.Show the pictures on the screen. Ask four students to explain what is happening in each picture. Give some help if they need. In every picture, there is a clock showing the time. The students should use the time to tell the story. Sample story: Last Sunday, I went to the park by bike at 11:00. I put my bike near the small trees. When I went to see the boys swimming, a thief saw my bike. While I was watching the boys swimming, he took my bike away.(or he stole my bike) . When I wanted to go back home, I couldn’t find my bike. I was very worried. I called the police at once. The police arrived a few minutes later. He helped me find out my bike. I thanked him and went back home. Step8 Self Check(1) Ask Ss to do the exercises , then check the answers. Step9 Self Check(2) First learn the phrases, especially “in hospital”& “at the doctors” Then ask Ss to look at what He Yan did yesterday. And then get Ss to write what they were doing at these times. Sample writing: While He Yan was at the doctor’s, I was going to the class. While she was having an English class, I was having a test. While she was having lunch with her mother, I was playing in the park. While she was visiting her aunt in hospital, I was studying in the classroom. While she was going shopping, I was going home. Step10 Self Check(3) Circle the words that don’t belong. Step11 Just for fun Ask Ss to look at pictures carefully and read the dialogue . Then find out the answers to these questions :“Was she scared? Ask Ss to underline the first sentence of each paragraph. 3. Explain some useful phrases: have fun/in silence/ take place/in space/hear about/as…as 4. Find out the dates when some important events happened. 5. Questions: 1) What do many American people remember? Why? 2) Where was Martin Luther king killed? 3) What was Robert Allen when Martin Luther King was killed? 4) What was he doing when he heard the news? 5) What did their teacher ask them to do then? 6) Who destroyed the World Trade Center?
