Hello, class. I am sorry. I am late today. Why am I late? I got up early. I had a quick breakfast. Then I got outside to wait for the school bus. But the bus had already left. That is to say: By the time I got outside, the bus had already left.
Look at the title of this unit. This is the grammar focus this week. The past perfect.
“By the time I got outside, the bus had already left.”
从句谓语为一般过去时（-ed），主句谓语为过去完成时（had +过去分词），表示在从句谓语动词动作发生之前，主句谓语动词动作已经发生。

By the time she got up, her brother had already gotten in the shower. Tina continued that after her brother got out of the shower, she took a quick shower and got dressed. But by the time she went outside, the bus had already left. The teacher asked what Tina did then. Tina told the teacher that she ran all the way to school. But when she got to school, she realized she had left her backpack at home. And the teacher realized why Tina looked stressed out. The teacher wanted to know what Tina did then. Tina answered that she ran home to get her backpack. But when she got home, she realized she had left my keys in the backpack. So she ran back to school without her keys or her backpack. And by the time she got back to school, the bell had rung. When Tina walked into class, the teacher had started teaching already. Then the teacher asked for their homework, but of course Tina didn’t have it.
