Objectives ● To learn to make, accept and decline invitations ● To learn to use the modal verb can for invitations and the modal verb have to for giving reasons Procedures ■Warming up by studying the title Hello, class. We are learning Unit 5 today. But first look at this sentence: You come to the party? What does it mean? You are correct. It means 你来参加聚会么?Then what does this sentence mean? Can you come to the party? Can means “能,行”. So this sentence means: 你能来参加聚会么?You may answer like these: Yes, I can. I can come to the party. Or No, I can’t. I have to do my home work. In these sentences both can and have to are modal verbs. They are part of the predicates. Can you come to school? Yes, I can. / No, I can’t. I have to see a doctor. Can you get to school by bus? Yes, I can. / No, I can’t. I have to walk. 1a Looking and matching Please look at the picture on page 25. The boy in the middle is going to hold a party. Can everyone come to the party? helping his parents, having a piano lesson, studying for a test, visiting my aunt, going to the doctor Please read these expressions loudly. And match the words with the pictures. Are you OK? Let’s check the answers. (Keys: 1. b 2. c 3. d 4. e 5. a) 1b Listening and writing You are great! As you see, there are some people in the picture. Do you know who’s who? Now please listen to the conversation. Pay attention to Sun Ning’s words carefully. He says the names of each person he is inviting. When I play the recording for the first time, you just listen carefully. When I play the recording for the second time, please write the names of each person next to his or her picture. You have to complete the activity on your own. OK, let’s go! Turn to page 86. Now read the tapescript. While reading find out all sentences with can and have to. Can you make sentences like those? I have to go to a meeting. —Anna, can you go to the hospital with me tomorrow? —I can’t, Sun Ning. I have to exercise. Now read the conversation again and underline all the useful expressions. Copy them in your notebook after class.While reading remember to cut/ the sentence into thought groups, study all the predicates, circle all the linking words and underline all the expressions.
