Module 4 Unit 2 Santa Claus is coming to town Shenyang No.162 Middle School Song Danmei According to the teaching goals of this Unit, I’ll mainly train students’ spoken English and let students know about Christmas and western countries’ custom and culture. Stress the importance of English as a tool for study and developing the students’ consciousness about becoming a good person. I divide the structure into seven parts: Analysis of teaching material, analysis of students, analysis of teaching approach, analysis of learning method, teaching procedure, blackboard design and teaching evaluation and reflection. Analysis of teaching material ◆ Status Function the purpose is to let students know about Christmas and western countries’ custom and culture. That will be helpful for students’ study in four skills and What’s more ,it will help them easily accept. To be related to daily life, it’s good to raise learning interest and improve their spoken English further consolidate the knowledge. ◆ Teaching objectives ★ Knowledge objectives a. Learn the new words by teaching and guessing b. Using relative clauses to describe people’s ability and quality c. Let students know about Christmas and be familiar with western countries’ custom and culture. ★ Abilities objectives a. To encourage the students to practice, participate and co-operate in the class activities. b. To train the students’ spoken English c. To develop the students’ abilities of communication by learning the useful structures ★ Moral objectives a. To further understand Christmas and be familiar with western countries’ custom and culture b. elicit students to become a person with good quality ◆ Key Points and difficult Points ★ Key Points Vocabulary :Santa Claus, Christmas, hardworking, patient, friendly, honest, beautifully, sewing, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, busy, stocking, believe, exchange, Phrases: look for, more than, prepare for, hang up, public holiday, ★ Difficult Points This passage is based on real life, we should set up a good learning surrounding for students so that they can study for application, use in study . Let students further understand Christmas and be familiar with western countries’ custom and culture, and use the knowledge of this lesson in real lives . ◆Analysis of students The students have learned English for only half a year at middle school. They can understand some sentences, but they aren’t on the same level. There are some students whose English are poor, Raise their interests to study English by appreciating the beautiful pictures and VCR. ◆Analysis of teaching approach As we all know, the main instructional aims of learning English in the middle school is to cultivate students’ abilities of listening , speaking, reading, writing and their good sense of the English language. So I’ll mainly use Communicative teaching method, Audio-visual teaching method and Task- based teaching method. I’ll try my best to increase Students Talking Time, emphases are to be laid on learner-centered teaching , and activity-based teaching, they are: pair work, group work, class activity. ★ Special feature: General description ---making-up--- discuss and comment---inference Through this clue, students can be trained : information--- knowledge--- imagination---evaluation. Let the students communicate with each other and develop the students’ interests in English. Give them confidence. Students are the most important roles in the class, teacher can be a partner, an assistant even a director, help Ss solve the problem by using the target language. ◆Teaching Aids Multi-media computer, some pictures and so on will be needed in this course. ◆Analysis of learning method Cognitive strategy & Collaborative study & link method To deal with all above, the students must have a good preview and they must take part in the activities and co-operate the tasks by using target language. They can use the link method, cognitive strategy and collaborative study to train their self-study, create abilities. They can also discuss the main idea to consolidate the knowledge with the help of teamwork ◆Teaching Procedure In this lesson, students can learn to use the knowledge that they’ve mastered freely in daily life .Attain the goal: study while using, use while studying. When did you see him? Do you know who he is? Say something about Santa Claus. Have students know about the topic of the class, Let students know Santa Claus will come and bring presents to children at Christmas 2 Word study Play some pictures Learn the new words while enjoying the pictures Make word study easier and more interesting for the students and have them be well prepared for the reading in vocabulary 8 discuss Look at Santa Claus’s poster, Discuss the topic: Pretend you are the Santa Claus, what kind of people will you give presents first? Say out some good qualities and abilities that people must have if they want to get Christmas presents first. All the students aren’t on the same level, so the answers are allowed both in English and Chinese 6 Drill practice Give target relative clauses to describe people use the drills to practice in class strengthen memories. elicit students to become a person with good quality and abilities 9 consolidation do a survey: What would your favourite classmate be like? What would your favourite teacher be like? discuss Consolidate the knowledge what they have learned 7 Introduce Christmas Show a VCR about Christmas, let students talk about how western people to celebrate Christmas Talk about how to celebrate Christmas Design different questions for different students and take turns to say something 9 summary Ask Ss to summarize the points by themselves Talk about Christmas Help them have a understanding of the main clue 3 Homework Composition (optional)1.What will you be like in the future? 2.How do people in western countries celebrate the Christmas? Choose one topic Consolidate the knowledge that they’ve learned 1 Blackboard design M4U2 Santa Claus is coming to town SUMMARY: 1: someone who are kind and patient. someone who… 2. Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day Teaching evaluation and reflection The students can learn the knowledge better because the tasks are designed well . Tasks must be close to their lives. A free situation is a must, activities make their study more efficiently, teamwork is their new power to study. What I will do is to guide them to work out problems by themselves instead of telling them the answers directly. Change their thoughts from “I have to study.” to “I want to study.” Helping the students to form their own learning strategies is important and helpful for their lifelong study and I’ll make great efforts to help them to achieve the goals.
