We take the past continuous tense (also called the past progressive tense) today. It is commonly used in English for actions which were going on (had not finished) at a particular time in the past. This page will explain the rules for forming the tense, and how it is used. How to form the past continuous tense? This tense was formed using two components: the verb BE (in the past tense), and the -ING form of a verb. Here are the rules, using the example verb "sing": Subject BE -ING FORM I was singing. You were singing. He was singing. She was singing. It was singing. We were singing. They were singing. ■Listening and vocabulary 1 Listen and number the characters in the story in the order you hear them. Next, I am going to play you a story. In the story you hear about some characters. Now listen and number the characters in the story in the order you hear them. a The Mad Hatter and the March Hare [ ] b The White Rabbit [ ] c The Cat [ ] d The King [ ] e The Queen [ ] 2 Listen and read. Lingling and Tony are talking about Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Now listen to their talk first, paying attention to the pronunciation, stress, and the intonation of the native speakers. For the second listening, try to read aloud the conversation to the tape while listening. Now let’s go on to read the conversation. While reading try to cut(断句)/ the sentences into parts, blacken(涂黑) the predicates, shade(加影) the connectives and underline (划线)the expressions. 3 Check(√)the true sentences. On page 43 there are eight sentences, true or false. Now read them and check(√)the true sentences. 1 Tony was watching TV last night. 2 Lingling was reading Alice's Adventures in Wonderland yesterday evening (√) 3 The rabbit was running when Alice saw it. (√) 4 The rabbit didn't know the time. 5 The King and Queen were sitting by the river 6 The cat was sleeping in the tree. 7 The Mad Hatter and his friends were sitting at a table(√) 8 Alice met the rabbit at a tea party. (√) Now correct the false: 1 Tony was doing his homework last night but not watching TV last night. 4 The rabbit was running because it was late, so the rabbit knew the time. 5 the Queen was playing in the garden and the King was sitting on the grass, so the King and Queen weren’t sitting by the river. 6 The cat was sitting in a tree and it was smiling, so the cat wasn’t sleeping in the tree. 4 Complete the sentences with the words in the box. grass hole smile strange tea party watch 1 A tea party is a meal in the afternoon with tea and cakes. 2 Grass is short, green and in a garden. It tells you the time 6 A rabbit hole is a place where rabbits live ■Pronunciation and speaking 5 Listen and repeat. On page 43, you see four short dialogues. Now listen to me and repeat after me. Talk as they do. (仿说) 1---Tang Xuemei was listening to blues. ---Yes,she was. 2---Her father was reading aloud a newspaper report. ---No,he wasn't 3---Wu Tingting was playing the guitar. ---Yes,she was. 4---She was working for an orchestra. ---No,she wasn't. 6 Write down what you were doing at these times. Hi, class. What were you doing at the following times? Yesterday: 7 am 1 pm 6 pm 9 pm Last Saturday: 7 am 1 pm 6 pm 9 pm Yesterday at 7 am I was going to school. Yesterday at 1 pm I was having a nap at home. Yesterday at 6 pm I was going home from school. Yesterday at 9 pm I was doing my homework at home. Last Saturday at 7 am I was getting up. Last Saturday at 1 pm I was having lunch in a restaurant. Last Saturday at 6 pm I was playing football on the playground. Last Saturday at 9 pm I was watching TV with my parents. 7 Work in pairs. Ask and say what you were doing at the times in Activity 6. ---What were you doing at 7 am yesterday? ---I was going to school. ---What were you doing at 1 pm yesterday? ---I was having a nap at home. ---What were you doing at 6 pm yesterday? ---I was going home from school. ---What were you doing at 9 pm yesterday? --- I was doing my homework at home. ---What were you doing at 7 am last Saturday? ---I was getting up. ---What were you doing at 1 pm last Saturday? --- I was having lunch in a restaurant. ---What were you doing at 6 pm last Saturday? ---I was playing football on the playground. ---What were you doing at 9 pm last Saturday? ---I was watching TV with my parents.
