Warming up — Talking about the Pictures
1. Ask the students to talk about the pictures at the very beginning of the unit. Sometimes, students may find it hard to open their mouths as they cannot decide what and how to say. Try to initiate the task by asking some who, what, where, when, which or how questions.
2. Ask the students how they usually meet people in the airport.
Note: Students are not supposed to restrain their thoughts within a certain scope. Encourage them to talk about anything related. The main purpose of this task is to inspire and excite students — make them really warmed up!
3. To sum up, the teacher introduces the background information of Unit 1 to make sure that the students have some idea of what this unit is all about and let students understand different cultures of airport etiquette. (Please refer to Related Information section in Teacher’s Book)
Lead-in
1. Write down some key words that students may hear in this part on the blackboard and encourage them to guess the meaning.
2. Have the students listen to Ex. 1 (2 times) and fill in the table. This exercise is to make students familiar with airport announcements and capture the key information.
3. Organize the activity to accomplish Ex. 2. Divide the class into small groups and discuss the four questions listed. Ask one representative from each group to answer the questions to the whole class.
4. Listen to the dialogue twice and finish Ex. 3 (Word matching) and Ex. 4 (True or False). This dialogue is to let students know about the airport check-in process.
5. Use pair work to role play Ex. 5 using the language presented in the previous dialogue.
Text A: Chicago Airport Transportation and Limousine Service
Text Explanation:
1. The teacher lets the students answer the text-related questions (Ex. 1) and helps them identify the main idea of each paragraph.
Note: Whether the answer is reasonable or not, remark it with encouraging and positive comments.
2. The teacher analyzes some difficult sentences and some language points while discussing the whole text with the students. (Please refer to Text A/Language Study section in Teacher’s Book for details.)
Note: The teacher may refer to some relevant exercises in the exercises after Text A when explaining a certain language point.
3. Ask students to translate some difficult sentences into Chinese orally.
4. Ask students to review the five pre-reading questions. If there were any misunderstandings, correct them now.
Exercises:
The teacher guides the students through the exercises, focusing on certain items or leaving some exercises as the students’ homework according to the students’ different levels of English. (For the exercise key, please refer to Teacher’s Book.)
1. Ex. 2 is to strengthen the comprehension of the text, and is suggested to complete in class.
2. Ex. 3 (Vocabulary) is to examine students’ mastery of new words and expressions of the text. Part 3 (Prefixes and Suffixes) is to introduce the main affixes occurring in the text, which makes the students understand word building. The teacher can ask the students to list more examples besides the ones listed in the exercise.
3. Ex. 4 is a summary of the text. All the fillings are the words or phrases from the passage. The teacher can also use this exercise as dictation or translation for the students.
4. Ex. 5 includes the useful structures occurring in the text. Students can imitate the model to finish the exercise.
5. Ex. 6 (Translation) is suggested to assign as the students’ homework.
Grammar Focus:
The teacher talks about the different usages of preposition “with”, and at the same time, asks the students to do the grammar exercises in class.
Post-reading Activity:
Organize the activity to accomplish Ex. 8 (Presentation). Divide the class into groups and arrange free discussion for the topic. Students can volunteer to present their ideas to the whole class and others can give positive or negative feedback towards them. This activity can also motivate students’ interest in the text.
Text B: What’s the Future of Air Travel?
Text Explanation:
While discussing the text with the students, the teacher calls on the students to pay attention to key words and structures in the text. (Please refer to Text A/Language Study section in Teacher’s Book for details.) Ask Students to translate some difficult sentences into Chinese orally.
Exercises:
The teacher asks the students to finish Ex. 1 (Comprehension) in class to further understand the text. Ex. 2 (Vocabulary) can be done either in class or after class. (For the exercise key, please refer to Teacher’s Book.)
Practical Writing & Time for Fun
