22.(8分) Caroline Solomon was on her high school's swim team. But at times she could not go into the creek(小溪)near her home. It was simply too polluted. "I decided I wanted to do something about it,"she recalls. So she studied environmental science and public policy at Harvard University in Cambridge. Later, she went to graduate school. Some of her classes could be challenging, though, since she couldn't hear her teachers. "I've been deaf since I was 15 months old,"Solomon notes.
Today she teaches biology at Gallaudet University in Washington,DC.She has no trouble communicating with her students. They, too, are primarily deaf or hard of hearing. That's why all classes at Gallaudet are taught in American Sign Language. Solomon also has an active life outside the classroom. She especially enjoys hiking, biking and other activities with her family.
Her research takes her to the Anacostia River. "It is very close to Gallaudet, and I easily bring my students there,"she says. Water running through local forests and marshes drains into this river,so does water running off urban streets, golf courses and industrial sites." The river's watershed(流域)kind of concentrates all the things that happen when humans mess with the natural landscape,"she explains. Not surprisingly, this river has developed a reputation for being quite polluted.
Solomon has been focusing on how pollutants affect tiny organisms that form the base of the river's food web. "I am now looking at the bacteria population," she says,"to see what types there are."
Solomon wants to see more students who are deaf or have other disabilities make a difference in environmental science and other fields. As she often says, "If I can do it, you can do it."

D.They can be a burden if they are dependent.

23.(8分)Naturally, parents praise their kids. They want to encourage their children every day. But when it comes to building self-esteem (自尊) in children, praise doesn’t always have a positive effect, according to a special edition of the journal Child Development. The issue, edited by Eddie and Thomas, is focused on research into how children develop a sense of self and building your child’s confidence takes different skills than you might think.
Eddie points out that children are born without a sense of self, but it doesn’t take long before some kids have a lot of confidence and may feel superior to peers, while others may carry more self-doubt and see themselves as inferior. Yet no one really understands what causes children to view themselves the way they do. Surprisingly little is known about the origins of children’s self-concept,” Eddie said.
Research has found that when kids have a warm, loving relationship with their parents, they develop higher self-esteem. However, when they are given endless praise that is inequal to their achievements, their self-esteem may drop.
Instead of lavish praise, parents should focus on warmth to build self-esteem, researchers have found—specifically, parents should show interest in their kids’ activities and share joy with them. This makes children feel noticed and valued. According to Eddie’s own research, children may develop lower self-esteem when their parents give them lots of positive and overstated praises. Too much praise can make children worry about disappointing their parents, and may lead to an unhealthy attitude toward failure. Other studies suggest that parents can teach children that failure is beneficial by encouraging kids to ask themselves: “Why didn’t I achieve the result I wanted, and what can I do to change the outcome in the future?”
Additionally, it’s important for parents to encourage the belief that kids can develop basic abilities through devotion and hard work. Kids who are praised for their effort instead of their ability are more likely to develop a growth mindset, which have a positive impact on their confidence.
1、What does the special edition of Child Development focus on?
A.When is the best time to build a child’s self-esteem.
B.What effect praise has on a child’s self understanding.
C.How children develop their sense of self-esteem.
D.How blaming and overpraise hurt a child’s comfidence.
2、How does too much praise hurt children’s self-esteem?
A.They’ll be afraid of failing and disappointing their parents.
B.They’ll have a false understanding of their ability and fail.
C.They’ll become too proud to get along with other children.
D.They’ll focus more on their advantages than their weaknesses.
3、What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Children’s effort will help build their confidence.
B.Children should he taught the value of hard work.
C.Praising a child’s ability will make them happier.
D.Some parents doubt if kids can develop their abilities.
4、Which of the following is the passage mainly about?
A.Praising a child for any reason helps build his self-esteem.
B.How kids develop their sense of self-esteem differently.
C.Why some kids have more self-doubt than the others.
D.Participation and encouragement build a kid’s self-esteem.
24.(8分) Apart from psychological illness,we are all largely responsible for our own emotional health. What we say to ourselves over and over for days, weeks, months, and sometimes years, has a great effect on how we see ourselves. This also contributes to many mental health disorders.
Many of us have problems with negative thoughts playing on the channel of our minds, but if you’re buried in them and believe them, they could be wearing your sense of self-esteem. Here are a few beliefs that indicate you may need to switch the channel:I’m not good enough? /I don’t deserve...? /No one likes me? /I’m a failure?
Negative thoughts remind you of your bad feelings and they bring your focus on your failures, and they get you nowhere.
What can you do? Here are some suggestions:
Switch the channel when negative thoughts appear. Self-talk is not so obvious that we often don’t notice its effect on our mood and belief systems. Key things to notice are “if only” or “what if” statements: the former keeps you caught in the past with regret, while the latter keeps you fearful of the future. There is nothing you can do about the past, and the future isn’t here yet, so stay in the present moment.
Recognize that actions always follow beliefs. You’ll find yourself behaving in ways that are consistent to your beliefs. So, start believing the best about yourself:act as if you believe that you’re a valuable and worthy person.
Develop positive selftalk rather than negative self-talk. Instead of always looking down upon yourself in your head, think of some things you actually like about yourself. What are your strengths? What are you good at? Instead of saying “I’m a loser”,try saying,“I am capable./I’m good at.../I accept myself the way I am.”
Thinking poorly about ourselves gets us nowhere and is extremely self-limiting. Decide today to turn off the negative self-talk channel in your mind and develop your true potential.
1、From the first two paragraphs we can learn that________.
A.lots of people have no sense of self-esteem
B.focusing on negative thoughts may have bad effect on people
C.negative thoughts will strengthen our sense of self-esteem
D.few people have negative thoughts and mental problems
2、The underlined word “wearing” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to________.
A.strengthening B.protecting
C.weakening D.replacing
3、What do the suggestions in the text tell us?
A.Our beliefs always come after actions.
B.Positive self-talk does good to our mental health.
C.Looking down upon ourselves is a sign of modesty.
D.“What if” keeps you stuck in the past with regret.
4、The text encourages us to________.
A.get rid of negative thoughts
B.get anywhere we like
C.think highly of others
D.turn off the se
