B.Procedures and Methods
Eight teaching periods are needed to cover the present unit, among which four periods are for the module of Language Skills Development, three periods for the module of Language in Use and one mainly for the module of Enhancement of Language Abilities.
I. Part 1 Language Skills Development
1. Period One and Period Two:
l Step One: Starter
A. First read the dos or don’ts concerning professional conduct and behaviour, then ask the students to choose which of them can be done or can’t be done and give their reasons. After that, the instructor can lead the students to have a discussion to give more dos or don’ts examples about professional ethics.
B. Listen to a fairy tale written by the Brothers Grimm and then fill in the blanks with appropriate words.
Before playing the tape, the instructor can ask the students to have a quick look at the new words and the statements first. Then play the tape and give students two or three minutes to do the exercise. After that check the answers and make explanations when necessary. Finally, show them the tapescript to further enhance their understanding.
This step shall take up 10-15 minutes.
l Step Two: New words and expressions
Go over the key words and expressions in the text (refer to Student’s Book Pages 130-132) to prepare students for the text learning.
The time for this step should not exceed 10 minutes.
l Step Three: Text teaching
Start teaching the text: The Tailor in Heaven. Before delving into the text, the instructor can ask general questions about the text such as “Do you like fairy tales? Whose fairy tales are your favorites? Why?”
After that the text organizational chart will be presented so that the students can expand each episode.
Then start the detailed study of the text and go through the text paragraph by paragraph. To help students understand the story, the instructor can explain the language points and ask students to answer the questions related to the text.
This step shall not take up more than one and a half periods.

1. It came to pass that one beautiful day God wished to take a stroll in the heavenly garden, and took all the apostles and saints with him, leaving no one in heaven but Saint Peter. 有一天,天气晴朗,上帝想到花园里去散散心。他带着所有的使徒和圣人去了,只留下圣彼得一个人。
Meaning: It happened that one beautiful day God wanted to go for a walk in his garden. All the apostles and saints went with him, and only Saint Peter remained in heaven.
come to pass: 发生
e.g. No one can foretell what will come to pass in the coming century.
stroll: n. 散步,闲逛,徘徊
e.g. My father sometimes goes out for a stroll with a stick in his hand.
A stroll round the garden hardly qualifies as exercise!
vi. 散步,闲逛,徘徊
e.g. I stroll around the street every day.
heavenly: a. 天堂的;神圣的
e.g. the heavenly kingdom
2. The Lord had commanded him to allow no one to enter during his absence, so Peter stood by the gate and kept watch. 临行前上帝吩咐说,在他外出期间不得让任何人进入天堂,于是圣彼得就站在天堂门口守着。
Meaning: God had ordered him not to let anyone get in heaven while he was out, so Saint Peter stood by the gate in case somebody slipped in.
command: vt. 1) 命令
e.g. The policeman commanded the car to stop.
2) 统率,指挥
e.g. The troops were commanded by General Haig.
3) 把握,支配
e.g. The police commanded the power and finances.
absence: n. 不在,缺席
e.g. Please look after my house during my absence.
the opposite of absence is presence.
keep watch: 值班,放哨
e.g. The soldiers were ordered to keep watch.

3. “I am a poor, honest tailor who is requesting admission,” replied a pleasant voice. “我是个老实本分的穷裁缝,求求你让我进去吧。”一个讨好的声音回答道。
Note that to request sth. is to ask politely or formally for something.
e.g. She requested permission to film at the White House.
You can request a free copy of the leaflet.
4. “Honest indeed,” said Peter. “Like the thief on the gallows. You have been sticky-fingered and have robbed people of their cloth. You will not get into heaven. The Lord has forbidden me to let anyone in as long as he is out.” “好一个老实本分的人!”彼得说,“就像上了绞架的小偷一样老实!你手脚不干净,常常偷人家的布料。你不能进天堂。天主吩咐他外出期间严禁任何人入内。”
Meaning: “What an honest man! You are as honest as the hanged thief. You’ve always cheated people out of their cloth. You are forbidden to enter heaven. God has told me that nobody is allowed to get in while he is away.”
indeed: ad. 真的,真是
e.g. An honorable man, indeed! 好一个正人君子!
sticky-fingered: a.〈口〉有偷窃癖的,爱偷东西的
e.g. Make sure you put your things away at night; some people round here are sticky-fingered.
rob: vt.1) SCC 抢夺(财物),劫掠,盗走
e.g. They killed four policemen while robbing a bank.
2) 剥夺,使丧失
e.g. The illness robbed him of a normal childhood.
collocation: “rob sb. of sth.”
forbid: vt. 1) 禁止,不许
e.g. I forbid you to stay out after midnight.
2) 阻止,妨碍
e.g. Lack of space forbids listing the names of all those who contributed.
Note the difference between forbid, ban and prohibit.
Forbid 系常用词,指“命令某人不做某事”
e.g. The doctor forbids him to smoke.
Ban 语气较重,指权威机关“正式禁止”,含“严厉谴责”之意,只能用物作其宾语
e.g. Ban atomic and nuclear weapons!
Prohibit 指“通过法律或政府法令禁止”
e.g. The soldiers were prohibited from leaving camp after dark.
5. “Oh, please be merciful,” cried the tailor. “Little scraps that fall off the table by themselves are not stolen, and are not worth mentioning. See here, I am limping and have blisters on my feet from walking here. I cannot possibly go back again. Just let me in, and I will do all the dirty work. I will tend the children, wash their diapers, wipe off and clean the benches on which they have been playing, and patch all their torn clothes.”“您行行好吧,”裁缝哀求道,“我不就是拣点桌上掉下来的碎料嘛,这不能算偷,根本不值一提。您瞧,我腿都走瘸了,一路走来,脚上已经打起泡,已经走不回去了。放我进去吧,什么脏活累活我都能干。我可以看孩子,洗尿布,还能擦他们玩脏的板凳,补他们的破衣服。”
Meaning: “Oh, please be kind to me. It is not an act of stealing to pick up and keep small pieces of cloth which drop to the ground from the table. It’s not a big deal. Look, I’ve come here with my legs injured and feet blistered. It’s impossible for me to walk back again...” begged the tailor.
merciful: a. 仁慈的,慈悲的
e.g. The merciful king saved the two young officers from death.
scrap: n. [C] 碎片,残余物
e.g. Put the scraps of paper in the wastepaper basket.
vt. 丢掉,报废,废弃
e.g. A bold decision was taken to scrap the existing plant.
fall off: 下降,跌落
e.g. Ripe apples are beginning to fall off.
Be careful not to fall off the ladder.
be worth doing sth.: 值得做某事
e.g. A lot of the small towns in the area are definitely worth visiting.
It’s worth checking the details of the agreement before you sign it.
Some phrases with “mention”:
don’t mention it 不要客气,不用谢;没关系,不要紧;哪里哪里(作客套语);not to mention... (=without mentioning...) 更不必说,更谈不上……
limp: vi. 跛行,蹒跚而行
e.g. She hurt her ankle and limped back home.
tend: vt./vi 1) 照顾,照料,看护
e.g. He has been tended without delay.
The shepherds tended their flocks.
2) 有某种倾向,易于
e.g. Fresh fruits tend to decay.
wipe off: 擦去,去除
e.g. I’m afraid this paint won’t wipe off.
My husband used a paper towel to wipe the spot off my leather purse.
patch: vt. 缝补,修补
e.g. I am patching his old pullover.
n. 小块土地
e.g. They grow their own vegetables on a small patch of ground.
torn: a. 扯破的
e.g. I also have an evening dress that is torn.

6. Saint Peter let himself be moved by pity and opened heaven’s gate just wide enough for the lame tailor to slip his lean body inside. He had to take a seat in a corner behind the door, and was told to stay there quietly and peacefully, so that the Lord would not notice him when he returned, and become angry. 圣彼得被他的话打动了,把天堂的门开了一条窄窄的缝,让精瘦的瘸腿裁缝溜了进来。他得坐在门后的角落里,安分待着,免得上帝回来后看见了发火。
lame: a. 跛足的
e.g. He is lame in one leg.
The lame child lagged behind.
slip: vi. 悄悄疾行,溜
e.g. The movie star had slipped into town before the crowds reached the airport.
7. The tailor obeyed, but one time when Saint Peter stepped outside the gate, he got up, and full of curiosity, looked into every corner of heaven, seeing what was there. 一开始裁缝遵从如仪,可圣彼得一出门,他就站了起来,好奇地东张西望,把天堂的每个角落都看了个遍。
step: vi. 踏,跨步
e.g. Sorry, did I step on your foot?
She stepped aside to let them pass.
look into: 窥视,浏览,观察

8. Finally he came to a place where there were many beautiful and costly chairs. At their center was a seat made entirely of gold and set with glistening precious stones. It stood much higher than the other chairs, and a golden footstool stood in front of it. 最后他来到一个地方,那里摆满了许多漂亮贵重的椅子,中央是一把纯金铸造的椅子,镶满了闪闪发光的宝石。这把椅子比别的椅子高很多,前面还搁了只镀金的脚凳。
set…with…: 用……装饰……

Its verb form is glisten.
e.g. Her eyes were glistening with tears.
9. This was the seat on which the Lord sat when he was at home, and from which he could see everything that was happening on earth. 这就是上帝在家时坐的那把椅子,坐在上面人间发生的一切就可以一览无余。
Note that in “on which the Lord sat…” and “from which he could see…”, the relative pronoun which introduces the attributive clauses, and on which and from which can both be replaced by where, though the original ones are clearer in meaning.

10. He noticed an ugly old woman who was standing beside a stream doing the laundry. She secretly set two scarves aside. Seeing this made the tailor so angry that he took hold of the golden footstool and threw it at the old thief, through heaven down to earth. 他看到一个长相丑陋的老妇人在小溪边洗衣服,偷偷地把两条围巾藏到了一边。裁缝见状,怒不可遏,抄起镀金脚凳朝那老贼砸了下去,从天堂一直砸到人间。
laundry: n. 1) 要(或正在)洗的衣物
e.g. If you have any laundry, just leave it in the laundry bag.
2) 洗衣房,洗衣店
e.g. With a big and a small washing machine she doesn’t have to go to the laundry in her neighborhood.
set aside: 把……搁到一边;留出;暂时不考虑
e.g. I set aside my overcoat and took out my summer clothes.
She tries to set aside some money every month.
动名词既具有动词的一些特征,又具有名词的句法功能:
e.g. Playing football is my favorite sport. 踢足球是我最喜欢的运动。
Traveling with friends on the weekend is fun. 周末与朋友一起旅游很有趣。
take hold of: 抓住,握住
e.g. Little children sometimes take hold of sharp knives and cut themselves.
11. Unable to bring the stool back again, he quietly sneaked down from the seat, sat back down in his place behind the door, and pretended that he had done nothing at all. 他见那凳子已经无法复归原处,便悄悄地从椅子上溜下来,坐回到门后的角落里,装作什么也没干过的样子。
sneak: vi. 偷偷地走,溜

12. When the Lord and Master returned with his heavenly attendants, he did not notice the tailor behind the door, but when he sat down on his seat, the footstool was missing. He asked Saint Peter what had become of the footstool, but he did not know. Then he asked if he had admitted anyone. 天主带着天国的随从回来时,没有看到躲在门后的裁缝。可当他坐到椅子上时,却发现脚凳不见了。于是他便问圣彼得凳子哪儿去了,圣彼得说不知道。上帝又问他有没有放人进来过。

13. “I know of no one who has been here,” answered Peter, “except for a lame tailor, who is still sitting behind the door.” “没有啊,”彼得答道,“只有一个跛脚裁缝,这会儿还在门后坐着呢。”
know of: 了解,听说
e.g. I know of the man, but I’ve never spoken to him.
Do you know of a good doctor?
except for: 除……外
e.g. His composition is good except for some spelling mistakes.

14. Then the Lord had the tailor brought before him, and asked him if he had taken the footstool, and where he had put it. 于是上帝便下令把裁缝叫来,问他有没有拿脚凳,放到哪里去了。
Meaning: Then the Lord ordered his attendants to bring the tailor to him, and asked him what he had done with the footstool.
have sth. done:1) (让,请)别人为你做某事

e.g. Houses near airports sometimes have their windows broken.

15. “Oh, Lord,” answered the tailor joyously, “in my anger I threw it down to earth at an old woman whom I saw stealing two scarves while doing the laundry.” “主啊,”裁缝得意地答道,“我看到一个老妇人洗衣服时偷了两条围巾,我一怒之下就把凳子朝她砸下去了。”
joyously: ad. 快乐地,快活地

16. “Oh, you scoundrel,” said the Lord, “if I were to judge as you judge, how would it have gone with you? I would have long since had no chairs, benches, seats, no, not even a stove-poker, but would have thrown everything down at the sinners. You can no longer stay in heaven, but must go outside the gate again. From there watch where you are going. Here no one metes out punishment, except for me alone, the Lord.” “你这个无赖!”上帝说道,“要是我也像你那样断案,你今天会怎么样?这些椅子、凳子甚至连拨火棍也早该扔向地上的罪人了!你不能再呆在天堂了,必须马上出去。路上好自为之吧。这里除了我——天主之外,谁也无权惩罚任何人。”

17. Peter had to take the tailor out of heaven again, and because his shoes were worn out and his feet were covered with blisters, he took a stick in his hand and went to Wait-a-Whil
