They influence our lives in so many ways. They teach us almost everything about living, give us strength of character and make us who we are. It is because of them that we become able to do our duties. The things that we are able to do are actually their gifts to us. Right from taking care of us when we are young to guiding us whenever we need their advice, they are always there by our side. All we can do for them is to give them love and happiness and try to make them feel proud of us. First of all, you need to follow all the good things they taught you when you were very young. It could be about eating healthily or exercising in a regular way, or it could be about helping anyone who needs help. Not make complaints is also a good way. So don't complain about what you don't have. Learn to appreciate (感激) and love what your parents give you; you may not know the struggles they go through in order to give  you that. Thirdly, you also need to start making your own decisions wisely and confidently. In other words, take control of your life by deciding what will be good or bad for you. Let them see that you are able to do all kinds of things without asking others for help. More importantly, you should try to be a good person. Be polite and respectful to your family and friends. When they give you advice or a suggestion, you'd better take their ideas into consideration. Try to work as hard as you can and be modest with what you have achieved. Anyway, seeing you grow into a good person will surely make your parents proud. Making your parents feel proud of you What your parents can do for you ●They teach you how to make a living and develop a strong character. ●Your 1. to deal with things is a gift your parents give you. ●They are always there to look after you and guide you. 2. to make your parents feel proud of you Follow what you were taught. ●Develop a healthy habit as your parents told you. ●Help anyone in need. Don't complain. Appreciate and 3. with all the things given to you by your parents. Make decisions on your  4.. Make your own decisions wisely and with 5.  to show you are able to deal with everything. Be a good person. ●Treat others politely and respectfully. ●Listen to your parents' advice. ●Work hard and not to be too proud of your achievements. Ⅳ. 阅读理解 A 13、 You put a blue lobster (龙虾) in boiling water, and a few minutes later, you take out a red lobster. Have you ever wondered why the lobster changes its color when it is cooked? Scientists at Manchester University’s school of chemistry in the UK have an answer. They found that a chemical in the shell called astaxanthin (虾青素) causes the lobster’s color to change. This chemical is red and is in the shells of both raw and cooked lobsters. But in raw lobsters, the redness of the astaxanthin is covered by the dark blue color of another chemical in the shell, crustacyanin (虾青蛋白).The darker color helps lobsters avoid enemies in the wild. And it is likely to have evolved (进化) by natural selection. However, when heated, the structure of crustacyanin changes. This makes the red color of astaxanthin stand out. This is similar to the changing colors of tree leaves in autumn. Leaves always contain the pigments that make them red, orange and yellow. But for most of the year, those pigments are covered by the bright green color of chlorophyll (叶绿素). In autumn, when the temperature cools and the sun’s light becomes weak, chlorophyll fades to make these warm-colored pigments visible (看得见的). “It is a scientific curiosity (神奇), but it may also have important uses in the real world,” said John Helliwell, the lead scientist, to The Daily Telegraph. “It could help people know when food has been cooked properly.” 1.Whose color is red? A.Crustacyanin. B.Astaxanthin. C.Chlorophyll. D.Pigment. 2.Which of the following is TRUE? A.Raw lobsters have no crustacyanin. B.Crustacyanin only exists in the shell of dead lobsters. A.pigment in leaves can protect trees from sunshine B.chlorophyll disappears because of high temperatures C.pigments in leaves can be seen all year round D.chlorophyll fades when sunlight becomes weaker 4.What can we learn from the article? A.Scientific studies can help people live a better life. B.No one knows why lobsters change their colors. C.US scientists discovered the chemical astaxanthin. D.Some animals change their colors with the seasons. B 14、I had never really liked reading and thought it was a waste of time. But once my teacher told our class to go to the library and find our favorite books. I love basketball, so I picked out a basketball book. It was called “Hoops” by Water Dean Myers. It is a good novel, and suitable for basketball lovers. This story is about a high school ball player named Lonnie. Lonnie lives in a poor family in Harlem, New York. He is a good basketball player and dreams of playing basketball in college, and of course in the NBA.When Cal, his new coach, walks into his life, he just wants to keep away from him. But at last they become friends and face many challenges together. I am now reading more of Walter Dean Myers’ books. A lot of his books are about growing up in Harlem, just like he did. However, I like “Hoops” best. From Lonnie, you will learn that the people around you really affect who you are, and how much it helps to have the support of family and friends in your life. He held a skateboard under one arm and a basketball under the other. Caitlin, who was walking in front of me, stopped when she saw the teen. I thought she’d be scared of him. I was WRONG. She backed up against the door and opened it as wide as it would go. I walked to the other side and let the boy pass. He said: “Thank you very much.” On our way to the car, I talked with Caitlin about holding open the door for the boy. I wanted to make sure whether she was troubled by his appearance. But the only thing Caitlin noticed about the teen was the fact that his arms were full. “He would have had a hard time to open the door.” I saw the shaved (剃光的) head and the blue hair. So my daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost me £12.” Harry was worried. He remembered selling the woman a return ticket. “Come into the office, Madam,” he said politely, “I’ll just check the Jersey timetable for May 22nd.” The woman and her little girl followed him inside. She was quite right, as Harry soon discovered. There was no sailing on May 22nd. How could he have made such a careless mistake? He shouldn’t have sold her a ticket for that day. Wondering what to do, he smiled at the child. “You look sun burnt,” he said to her, “Did you have a nice holiday in Jersey?” “Yes,” she answered, shyly, “The beach was lovely.
