A cold drink may be just the thing. But be careful what you pour down your throat. Something that looks cool may not be good for your health. There are plenty of so-called energy drinks on the market. Most of them have an attractive colour and cool name. Their nutrition list also contains various things from vitamins to ginseng. Sounds great! But after a careful check you may find that most energy drinks contain high levels of caffeine. These drinks are typically aimed at young people, students, busy people and sports players. Makers sometimes say their drinks make you better at sports and can keep you awake. But be careful not to drink too much. Caffeine raises your heartbeat. Because of this, the International Olympic Committee has limited their use. The amount of caffeine in most energy drinks is at least as high as in a strong cup of coffee or strong tea. Research by Australian scientists has found that many teenagers are affected by caffeine. The results of their survey show that 27 percent of boys aged 8-12 take in more caffeine than their parents. There are potential health risks linked to energy drinks. Just one can of energy drink can make you nervous, have difficulty sleeping and can even cause heart attacks. Teenagers should be discouraged from consuming drinks with a lot of caffeine in them, an expert from the Australia Nutrition Foundation said. 1、Generally, people would like to ________. A.take vitamins B.eat ginseng C.have a cold drink D.have a meal 2、The International Olympic Committee limit the use of caffeine because ________. A.it makes you better at sports B.it can keep you awake C.it can make you nervous D.it make your heart beat fast 3、The writer mentions the fact that “27 percent of boys aged 8-12 take in more caffeine than their parents” to show that ________. A.caffeine has an effect on many teenagers B.parents should take in more caffeine C.the caffeine problem is not serious D.the grownups take less caffeine than childre 22.(8分)Parents often believe that they have a good relationship with their teenagers. But last summer, Joanna and Henry noticed a change in their older son: suddenly he seemed to be talking far more to his friends than to his parents. “The door to his room is always shut,” Joanns noted. Tina and Mark noticed similar changes in their 14-year-old daughter. “She used to cuddle up (蜷伏)with me on the sofa and talk,” said Mark. “Now we joke that she does this only when she wants something. Sometimes she wants to be treated like a little girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is figuring out which time is which. ” Before age 11, children like to tell their parents what’s on their minds. “In fact, parents are first on the list.” said Michael Riera, author of Uncommon Sense for Parents with Teenagers. “This completely changes during the teen years.” Riera explained. “They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents last.” Parents who know what’s going on in their teenagers’ lives are in the best position to help them. To break down the wall of silence, parents should create chances to understand what their children want to say, and try to find ways to talk and write to them. And they must give their children a mental break, for children also need freedom, though young. Another thing parents should remember is that to be a friend, not a manager, with their children is a better way to know them. 1、“The door to his room is always shut” suggests that the son _______. A.keeps himself away from his parents B.doesn’t want to be disturbed C.is always busy with his studies D.begins to dislike his parents 2、What troubles Tina and Mark most is that ________. A.their daughter isn’t as lovely as before B.they don’t know what to say to their daughter C.they can’t read their daughter’s mind exactly D.their daughter talks with them only when she needs help 3、Which of the following best explains “the wall of silence” in the last paragraph? A.Teenagers talk a lot with their friends. B.Teenagers do not want to understand their parents. C.Teenagers talk little about their own lives. D.Teenagers do not talk much with their parents. 4、What can be learned from the passage? A.Parents are unhappy with their growing children. B.Parents should try to understand their teenagers. C.Parents should be patient with their silent teenagers. D.Parents have suitable ways to talk with their teenagers. 23.(8分)If you look on the Internet, you will see that almost every day of the year celebrates some kind of food. These “holidays” have become very popular across the United States. They give people a chance to enjoy something they might not eat normally, like National Onion (洋葱) Ring Day, for example. Food holidays also give restaurants and other businesses a chance to promote their products. But where did these American “holidays” come from? Many are the invention of an Alabama man, John-Bryan Hopkins. He writes about food for his Foodimentary. com website. Hopkins told Time magazine that when he began his site in 2006, there were only 175 “holidays.” “I filled in the rest,” he said. The National Day Calendar has a list of all the different food and non-food related “holidays.” In the past, the website used to let anyone create their own day—for a price. But now, the site only accepts requests from businesses and other organizations. While some food “holidays” are indeed made-up, many have historical roots. For example, National Beer Day on April 7 marks the end of a U. S. ban on the production, transport, import and sale of alcoholic drinks. The ban lasted from 1920 until 1933. The Salvation Army, a Christian group, launched U. S. National Doughnut Day on June 1, 1938. It was meant to honor women who served soldiers doughnuts during World War I. But not everyone likes food holidays. Bethany Jean Clement is a food writer for the Seattle Times newspaper. She wrote, “I get that some people might be excited by, say, National Doughnut Day. But you really can have a doughnut any day you want!” Tavi Juarez, also of Foodimentary. com, thinks national food holidays are here to stay. She told the Seattle Times, “In my modest opinion, I believe that food holidays will continue to grow in popularity online because there’s a lot of negativity (消极) out there. Why not choose to celebrate food instead?” 1、Why does the website accept others’ own day? A.To promote traditional food. B.To make money. C.To create new holidays. D.To attract more viewers. 2、What is National Beer Day related to? A.Law. B.War. C.Right. D.Custom. 3、Who dislikes food holidays? A.John-Bryan Hopkins. B.The Salvation Army. C.Bethany Jean Clement. D.Tavi Juarez. 4、Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A.Good Chances to Enjoy Particular Foods. B.Traditional American Foods on the Internet. C.Tricks of Businesses: Promotion of Products. D.National Food Days: An American Tradition. 24.(8分)We ate on the go more than ever before. Here are three health apps that can help you better manage your health when you pursue your dreams. Doctors On Demand Doctors On Demand enables you to visit a doctor without ever leaving your home, helping you use a computer, tablet or smart phone to have a doctor video chat with you. The service will help you locate and connect you to licensed doctors, psychologists, pediatricians (儿科医生) and more. Fees can be paid with HAS & FSA.It costs $ 40 for 15 minutes with a doctor or $50 for 20 minutes with a psychologist. Text 4 baby I’m a big fan of Text4baby for a few reasons. The free service for pregnant women and new moms works by sending text messages to your smart phone three times a week with information about how to have a healthy pregnancy and baby. And the messages are timed to the pregnant woman’s due date or the baby’s date of birth, sending tips that are relevant to where a mother is in her pregnancy or where a baby is in stages of development. Tips range from breastfeeding to car seat safety to reminders about exercise, nutrition and more. The service combines interactive text messages, an app, video and web content in English and Spanish. Sign up by texting BABY to 511-411 or by downloading the app. RISE RISE, an app available on iPhone (coming to Android in 2016), pairs you up with (与绑定) a registered dietitian to improve your diet and reach health goals. You share photos of your meals and your exercise for the day with your coach, who then looks for areas where you can improve and gives advice, helps you set goals and is there to pat you on the back virtually (虚拟地) when you hit a milestone. What’s also great is that you can text as much as you want with your dietitian and there is no need to go into an office. Fees for this service range from $9 per month to $50 a month. There is a free 7-day trial so you can try it out for a week to see if it’s fit for you. 1、How much will you pay if you have a video chat with your psychologist for an hour using Doctors On Demand? A.$50. B.$80. C.$100. D.$150. 2、We can infer that the author is probably a . A.famous pediatrician B.software engineer C.pregnant woman or new mother D.registered dietitian 3、What do you know about Text 4 baby? A.It is an app available only on iPhone. B.You can sign up by texting BABY to 511-411. C.People can’t use Text4baby for free. By December 2017 , the Chinese Academy of Sciences had created two clone macaques(猕猴) named“Zhong Zhong” and “Hua Hua”by nuclear transferring of body cells—any cell in the organism other than reproductive cells. This was the similar technology used to create the famous clone sheep Dolly in 1996. Telra, a monkey born in 1999 , is the world’s first ever-cloned monkey, but it was done using a simpler method called embryo splitting(胚胎分裂),and cannot be genetically modified to suit experimental needs, said Pu Muming, a leading researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Cloning a monkey using body cells has been a world-class challenge because it is a primate(灵长类)that shares its genetic makeup, therefore all of its complexity, with humans, he said. For drug and other lab tests, scientists have to purchase monkeys from all over the world, which is costly, bad for the environment and produces inaccurate results because each monkey might have different genes, Pu said. By cloning monkey using body cells, we can mass reproduce a large number of genetically identical monkeys in a short amount of time, and we can even change their genes to suit our needs, he added. “This can save time, cut down experiment costs, and produce more accurate results, leading to more effective medicine.” Sun Qiang, director of the non-human primate research facility at the institute, said most of the drug trials are currently done on lab mice. However, drugs that work on mice might not work or even have severe side effects on humans because the two species are so different. Monkeys and humans are both primates, so they are much closely related and testing on monkeys is supposed to be as effective as testing on humans. This achieveme
