Here is a picture of our mouths so that you can compare where the tongue is for these two sounds.

[i ] 短音，靠喉咙发出，发声处靠后，口型略窄，发这个音时，要短促有力。
[i:] 长音，靠口腔发出，发声处靠前，口型很扁，嘴唇向两边张开成微笑状。

We make the sound in "heed" 长音(/i/) with our tongue very close to the top of our mouth. We also spread our lips so it looks like we are smiling.
You can see how Laurie looks like she is smiling when she says /i/ in the picture.

When we make the sound in "hid" 短音(/I/), we don't look as much like we are smiling, and our tongues are lower in our mouths.
