Two commercial airliners, presumably hijacked, struck 18 minutes apart into one of New York’s most visible symbols, the 410-meter-plus(1,360-foot-plus) twin towers of the World Trade Center in downtown Manhattan, sending flames and smoke bursting from the upper floors and showering debris(碎片)to the streets. About 90 minutes after the first plane struck, the south tower off the World Trade Center collapsed completely; the north tower, with television cameras still transmitting live pictures, disappeared from the New York skyline in a huge puff(吹,喷)of smoke less than 30 minutes later. The total number of dead and wounded was not immediately known, but American Airlines said in a statement it had lost two planes with total of 156 people aboard “in tragic incidents this morning”. The Federal Aviation Administration said two United Airlines planes were also missing. Terrified passersby ran for their lives and office workers jumped from upper floors during the first attack just after the morning rush hour, witnesses said. The attacks were a complete surprise. “We had no warning of any kind.” New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said deploring(悲痛), on CNN, “a tremendous number of lives lost.” Almost simultaneously as the second plane hit New York, another airliner plowed(前进)into the Pentagon. In the five years since its founding, the WTO has become well-known as one of the world’s most powerful economic(经济的)organizations, taking its place alongside the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. The system(制度)of global rules for international trade, however, dates back half a century to 1948 when the General Agreement on Tariffs(关税)and Trade(GATT)was formed after World War II. As time went by it became clear that the GATT had two major drawbacks-the limited areas of trade it covered, and the lack of an effective system to settle disputes. After seven years of trade talks ending in 1994. the so-called Uruguay Round finally gave birth to the WTO, complete with an effective system to settle disputes and new rules covering trade in services and intellectual property(知识产权). Even after seven years of talks and 22,500 pages of agreements there were still problems, especially the difficult-to-deal-with areas of agriculture and services. The WTO, with its head office in Geneva, has 135 members with 30 more waiting to join. 44. From the passage we know that the GATT stopped working________. In my opinion, three factors are very important. They are: diligence, devotion and perseverance. The first factor to success is diligence, which means no waste of time. Diligence can help us remove ignorance, overcome difficulties and can make a fool wise, and poor in knowledge rich. Devotion, which means the concentration of our mind and constant efforts in doing something. Whatever we do, do it whole-heartedly. Furthermore, perseverance, or a strong will, is also necessary in order to make success a certainty. Without strong will, on the other hand, we are likely to give up when we meet with difficulties. To conclude, all great men achieve success through diligence, devotion and perseverance. Just as the famous saying goes “No pains, no gains.”
