Culture Shock There was a Chinese man in America for the first time to earn money,and after he had learned little English,he went to rent house alone.There he said in Chinglish:“I eat you,sleep you,how much a week?”(我吃你的，住你，多少钱一我吃你的，住你，多少钱一个月）个月）Surely,the house lady was shocked by his word and felt embarrassed.Firstly,I want to share with you a short story:This case shows a very common situation which widely lies in the communications within different cultures.This is what we calledCulture ShockCulture Shock Culture shock is the personal disorientation不适不适应应 a person may feel when experiencing an unfamiliar way of life due to immigration移民移民 or a visit to a new country,or to a move between social environments,also a simple travel to another type of life.Culture shock can be described as four phases:HoneymoonHoneymoonNegotiationNegotiation转变转变 Adjustment&Adjustment&MasteryMastery掌握掌握CulturesValuesValuesValues As we all know,Western culture is based on individualism个人主义个人主义 rather than on collectivism集体主义集体主义.In western culture,everyone is considered as special and unique.But standing out on ones own is not favored and would even arouse criticism from the others in our country.This stops us to express and talk freely and everyone believes“silence is gold”Table mannerOne topic is chopsticks.Because of using chopsticks,instead of using spoon,when Chinese people having rice or soup,its likely for us to hold up our bowls.But this habit is considered rude in the Western countries.Colors its quite interesting to find that most Easterners chose red while most of the westerners preferred blueblue.Another difference is about meanings of color we feel.Red Red means luck,fortune luck,fortune in China.We often use this color to decorate in festivals.But red stands for bloodblood,revolutionsrevolutions and red is regarded as an unlucky color unlucky color in West.Conclusion Culture shock is not fearful,what is fearful is we lack of the courage to overcome it.If you stay calm,observe and learn,and keep things in perspective,youll probably find that your difficulties will pass.Thanks you!
