II. Language Points in the Reading Selection

1． search 寻找
（1）in search of中，不用任何限定词；search 前有限定词时，后接介词for。
（2）look for “寻找”，较为通俗，常用于日常用语；search for 语气较强，指用很大注意力搜寻。

常用词组：
search sb. of sth. 搜查某人找某物
search a place for sth. 搜查某地找某物
search for sb./sth. 寻找某人/物
search through one’s pockets 仔细搜寻某人的口袋
in a /the /one’s search for 寻找……
in search of 寻找……

2．fix one’s eyes on sb．全神贯注于（尤指）凝视某人／物
e.g. Her eyes were fixed on the gun 她紧盯着那支枪。

常用词组：
Fix one’s thoughts/attention on what one is doing 全神贯注地工作

3．stare at 盯着某人
e.g. Slowly it turned its face and stared straight at Mrs smith.
慢慢地它转过脸来，直盯着史密斯夫人。

at 多表示“目标，方向”，如：
shoot at the bird 向着鸟射击。
shoot the bird 击中这只鸟
stare at 盯着（惊讶地）
glare at 盯着（愤怒地）
glance at 一瞥
shout at 向……喊
laugh at 嘲笑
throw at 朝……扔
aim at瞄准……
tear at 撕，扯……
rush at向……冲去

4．have sth．done
（1）让别人干某事
e.g. I want to have a house built．
我要（让别人给我）建套房子。
（2）自己干某事，但不情愿
e.g. He had his leg broken when he feel off the tree．
当他从树上掉下来时，腿摔断了。

比较：have sb. do sth．让某人干某事
The boss had him work for long hours
老板让他长时间地工作。
have sb．doing sth．
让某人一直于某事，强调持续一段时间，多与 half an hour，throughout the night等一起连用。
Don’t have the water running while you brush your teeth．
当你刷牙时，不要让水一直流着。

5．attend
（1）参加，照料
e.g. attend a meeting 参加会议
attend classes 听课
attend school 上学
The patient was well attended（to）by the doctor．
病人被医生很好地照顾着。
（2）常常与介词 to 连用，表示“照料，照顾，专心，注意”等。
e.g. attend to one’s work 做好自己的工作
They would very much like to attend to the adi\vice of customers carefully.
他们非常愿意倾听顾客的意见。
The women attended to the wounded day and night.
妇女们日日夜夜照顾伤员。
（3）伺候，伴随，看护．常常与介词on／upon连用
e.g. She had many servants to attend on／upon her．
她有许多仆人伺候她。
（4）attention n．关心．留心；注意

常见的搭配有：
draw／attract／call one’s attention 引起某人的注意
pay special/no/close/enough attention to sth. 特别／不／密切／足够注意某事
bring one’s attention to sb．叫某人注意某事
be worth one’s attention 值得某人注意

6．pride n．得意，自豪
（1）take pride in 以……为荣．对……感到自豪
e.g. He took great pride in being a member of the club．
他以身为那个俱乐部的会员而深感自豪。
（2）be proud of 以……自豪
e.g. He was proud of his school record．= He took pride in his school record.
他以学校的成绩自豪
(3) be proud to do 因做……而自豪
e.g. I’m very proud to call you my friend.
能够和你以朋友相称，使我感到自豪。
(4)be proud that 以……为荣
(5)proud 有自尊心的，高傲的
e.g. He was too proud to borrow money.
他很有自尊心，不会伸手向人借钱。
I got angry at his proud manner.
我因他那傲慢的态度而发怒
