Some minority lanuages will die out and some nations tend to keep minority languages. I reckon that most common used international languages ease our life quality and communication with different nationalities. On the other hand, we need to help improve minority languages. There are many languages in the entire world but two or three minority languages die out each year. Some countries try to save dying languages. For instance, Australian Government created a project to save the language and culture of Maori who are Australian aborigines. And there are other projects to keep minority languages such as American Indian language. However, the worldwide job market usually requires candidates who can speak English or other international languages. People who cannot speak lingua franca (共通语) could hardly be promoted at work. For example, some companies need an employee who can deal with foreign companies. So most people tend to learn at least one international language that helps them to find a better job. Therefore, world needs one common lingua franca that should be spoken in any country. Consequently, one common language should be a required subject in every school. So anyone speaking one common language can travel without worries to any point of the world and trade their products. People will not be forced to learn many languages. In conclusion, we should help minority nations to keep their languages for the cultural diversity. To ease the worldwide communication among nations, we should create a common language and provide courses of it. As a result, no one will face a language issue. 1、What does the underlined word “reckon” in Paragraph 1 mean? A.Deny. B.Fear. C.Ignore. D.Think. 2、What can be inferred from Paragraph 2? A.Not all minority languages are useful. B.Some minority languages have died out. C.Maori is attractive to Australian tourists. D.American Indian language is well preserved. 3、Why do most people study more international languages? A.It benefits their journey. B.They can earn more money. C.It does good to find a good job. D.They are eager to get promoted. 4、How can we stay away from language problems? A.By learning a common language. B.By wiping out minority languages. C.By studying more languages at college. D.By communicating more with foreigners. 22.(8分)Most heroes are not super. They don’t appear in comic books, on television, or in movies. They just do what they believe needs to be done to make their world a better place. Bike Batman is one of them. Bike Batman is a 30-year-old married engineer who lives in Seattle, Washington. He’s a cyclist who also buys and sells bikes as a hobby. About three years ago, he was looking for a bike for his wife. He found one on Craigslist, a website where people list things they want to sell. As he often does, he also looked at Bike Index, a popular website that allows users to register their bikes and post reports when they’re taken. The bike, which he was considering purchasing, clearly matched one reported stolen on Bike Index. Then he called the person who claimed to be the bike’s owner and arranged to meet him— supposedly to complete the sale. When the two men met, Bike Batman told the thief, “You’ve got two options. You can wait until a police officer gets here, or you can just get out of here.” You can imagine what the thief did. After that first success, Bike Batman developed a safer routine. When he sees questionable bike ads on Craigslist, he cross-references the image with bikes reported on Bike Index. Once he has confirmed it with the owner, he arranges a meet-up with the thief and will call the Seattle police department so that officers can participate in the action. In more than half of the 22 cases in which he has got back and returned bikes, the thieves have been arrested. In one case, Bike Batman even helped a family recover a wide range of prized possessions that suspects had stolen during a home burglary. His nickname came from a discussion with a police officer who suggested he be called “Robin Hood”. Since he wasn’t exactly stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, “Batman” seemed a better fit. The idea of a superhero punishing criminals feels pretty silly to him, but the main reason he continues his work is to keep up Seattle’s reputation as a friendly city. 1、Bike Batman is . A.a superhero B.a website manager C.a Seattle citizen D.a police officer 2、When Bike Batman discovers a questionable bike, he will first . A.contact the owner of the stolen bike B.look up the bike’s information C.call the police department D.arrange to meet the thief 3、Bike Batman helps find the lost bikes to . A.become famous B.help poor people C.punish bike thieves D.build a friendly city 4、From the passage, we can learn that . A.Bike Batman felt relieved to see the thieves arrested B.Bike Batman began his good deeds by accident C.the police failed to perform their duties D.the thieves refused to return the bikes 23.(8分)“Auld Lang Syne” is a song that everyone drunkenly sings, which marks the start to a brand new year. No one ever seems to know the words (something about forgetting old acquaintances?) or what they mean (why would we want to forget people?), but, in America, it’s as much a part of New Years’ tradition as wine. But why? The lyrics (歌词) to the song come from a poem written by the great Scottish poet Robert Bums in 1788. Its title is believed to be an old Scottish way of saying “a long time ago.” Phrases like “In the days of auld lang syne” also appear in other Scottish fairytales and poems, usually as a way of saying “Once Upon a Time.” While it still causes confusion, it is believed that the opening lines of the song are meant to be rhetorical (夸张的); “Should auld acquaintance be forgotten, and never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgotten, and auld lang syne?” therefore means we should have a drink in honor of whatever is passing, and remember old friends. When the Scots immigrated to America in the 19th century, they brought the song with them. But its great popularity can be largely due to the Canadian bandleader Guy Lombardo. In 1965, he explained how he himself came to associate the song with the end of the year to Life Magazine: “Auld Lang Syne is our theme song—and was long before anyone ever heard us on the radio. In our particular part of western Ontario, where there’s a large Scottish population, it was traditional for bands to end every dance with Auld Lang Syne. We didn’t think it was known here. If you want to see the singer in action, check out his final performance on the eve of 1977, after performing for 48 years in a row. 1、How might people feel when first hearing the song Auld Lang Syne? A.Confused. B.Moved. C.Energetic. D.Comfortable. 2、Why do people sing Auld Lang Syne when New Year is coming? A.To hope for good luck. B.To celebrate the New Year. C.In honor of Robert Bums. D.In memory of the past. 3、Why is Guy Lombardo mentioned in the text? A.He created the song Auld Lang Syne. B.He made the song Auld Lang Syne more popular. C.He brought the song Auld Lang Syne to America. D.He was the first to sing the song Auld Lang Syne. 4、What might be the best title for the text? A.What does Auld Lang Syne Mean? B.Who Makes Auld Lang Syne Popular? C.How does Auld Lang Syne Come into Being? D.Why do People Sing Auld Lang Syne on New Year Eve? 24.(8分)A Vietnamese man hopes to raise the quality of education in his country by building "parent libraries" in rural schools. Nguyen Quang Thach provides libraries to the schools so books are more available in farming communities. He works with publishers in Hanoi to get the books at reduced rates for teachers and their students. Mr. Thach says most schools have enough textbooks. But he says many poor families have few books at home and do not visit school libraries. He learned this by talking with farmers, workers and students. More than 90 percent of Vietnam's population can read and write. But academic performance in the schools remains low compared to other Southeast Asian nations. Corruption is a big part of the problem. Vietnamese media often have stories about teachers giving high grades in exchange for money. Some experts criticize teaching methods that depend heavily on dictation. They say asking students to repeat everything a teacher says to the class harms their ability to think for themselves. Nguyen Quang Thach says he wants people to invest money in books for a better future. To date, almost 1,000 parent libraries have been built in Thai Binh Province, Hundreds of books are in each one. Several other provinces have copied this model. For each school, Mr. Thach helps build libraries for up to four classes. Other people then follow his example. Parents of school children pay three dollars each for the first year and one dollar in other years. The head of the An Duc Secondary School, Pham Duc Duong, told reporter Marianne Brown that Mr. Thach's work has improved the quality of education. "He says students have been doing better in competitions, especially in social science." Duong Le Nga heads the school youth group. She says that after the libraries were built, students started asking teachers more questions. The students also set up debating teams. She thinks Mr. Thach's example helps students think more creatively ----"outside the box." The deputy head of the school, Uong Minh Thanh, says many students there will work in factories. But after seeing the influence of the new libraries, he hopes the children will set high goals for themselves. 1、We can learn from the passage that Vietnamese teachers . Each year in November, I receive a flurry of emails and texts from friends who want to volunteer with their families on Thanksgiving as a way to give back. I also field phone calls from organizations who want to donate to local programs that provide Thanksgiving meals. However, as an official who still works in the nonprofit sector, I also feel deeply anxious because I know the other 51 weeks of the year, these critical programs that provide food access to residents in need are starving for both volunteers and donations. Hunger is a year round problem, and each week volunteers are the necessary part to ensure th
