The centenary celebration
Chinese president Hu Jintao addressed the celebrating conference for Tsinghua centennial held in the Great Hall of the People on April 24. President Hu Jintao put forward several requirements for Chinese universities and college students.Hu jintao required college students to develop both political integrity and ability; in the meanwhile students should develop their unique personality. For Chinese universities, Hu jintao said they should strive to enter the first-class of the world.
As President Hu said, education is the foundation of a country's prosperity. At present, China’s higher education system is faced with many problems. To accomplish our president’s requirements we still have a long way to go.
The problems we faced
As a college student I can clearly see the disadvantages and deficiencies of high education system.
First, the climate in universities .Like the May Fourth Movement, many social thoughts and reformations are originated from universitives. It is the university that holds the steering wheel of social advance, but nowadays the climate in university becomes more and more utilitarian. Instead of the national destiny and international affairs what the college students care for are all about games, boyfriends or girlfriends and their future jobs. Society needs advanced ideas to push the society forward. So the construction of high education system is of great significance to our national rejuvenation and prosperity.
Second, academic skullduggery and lack of innovation, I think, are the most serious problems that Chinese universities faced at present. What China’s university need is an academic management team not an administrative one. To solve those problems China must take drastic measures.
The reflection
In my personal opinion, Tsinghua University centenary celebration is not just a celebration for Tsinghua University to memorize the establishment of this university also an opportunity for Chinese higher education system to reflect the problem it has. As the most prestigious educational institution of China, Tsinghua University is followed by all Chinese universities. In other word, Tsinghua University leads the way of China high education. So Tsinghua’s action is really important. Following the steps of the elder generation, Tsinghua should be the pioneer again and make changes to blaze a new way for Chinese universities.
I wish through this centenary celebration, state and party leaders would have more reflection on the reform of higher education system. Although I am only a student studying in a common university, I feel I have the responsibility to help my country make progress and make my people’s life become happier. For now I have no ability to change the present situation of Chinese higher education system or influence the climate in university but, I hope, one day I can change all this through my own efforts!
