They also get a chance to learn more about the world, and about themselves. This week this program is celebrating its 50th anniversary. President John Kennedy established the Peace Corps soon after the took office in 1961. It was the time of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. The new program gave Americans a chance to answer the call to service that the president made in his inaugural(就职的)speech. “Ask not what your country can do for you,” he said. “Ask what you can do for your country.” Kennedy told Peace Corps volunteers that America’s image in the countries where they were going would depend largely on them. On August 30th, 1961, the first group of 51 Peace Corps volunteers arrived in Accra, Ghana, to serve as teachers. They had agreed to work for almost no pay. They would spend two years in Ghana helping its people and learning the reality of life in a developing country. Most of the volunteers had just completed college. About half of them taught English or health care. In the 50 years since then, more than 200,000 Americans have served as Peace Corps volunteers. They have worked in 139 countries. The Peace Corps is a government agency that was created to promote world peace and friendship. There are three goals: First, to help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women. Second, to help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the people served. And, third, to help promote a better understanding of other people on the part of Americans. Today, the Peace Corps has more than 8,000 volunteers and trainees in 77 countries. They work in agriculture, economic development, education, the environment and health care. Some work in programs related to youth development. Sixty percent of current Peace Corps volunteers are women. The average age of a volunteer is 28. But the ages of Peace Corps volunteers ange from 18 to 86. Some Americans join the Peace Corps after they retire. Today seven percent of volunteers are over the age of 50. And 19 percent are members of minority groups. 56. Volunteers for the Peace Corps can . A. have an opportunity to help all the people in developing countries B. travel to many foreign countries to learn more about the world C. contribute to lives in developing countries and develop themselves D. improve their abilities by learning in some developed countries 57. Most of the volunteers had just graduated from college. 58. The fourth paragraph is mainly about . A. what the Peace Corps is and its function B. why the Peace Corps was created and its goals C. What role the Peace Corps play in daily life D. how the Peace Corps was created and its aims 59. According to the text, volunteers and trainees assist in the following aspects EXCEPT . A. education B. environment C. government D. health care 60. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. Most of the volunteers for the Peace Corps are women. B. Few minority groups joined the Peace Corps. C. Various people take an active part in the Peace Corps. D. Half of the retired volunteers joined the Peace Corps. B In the early nineteen fifties, researchers found that people scored lower on intelligence tests if they spoke more than one language. Research in the sixties found the opposite. So which is it? Researchers presented their newest studies last month at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The latest evidence shows that being bilingual(双语的)does not necessarily make people smarter. But researcher Ellen Bialystock says it probably does make you better at certain skills. She says bilingual people are often better at controlling their attention—a function called the executive(执行的)control system. Ms Bialystock is a psychology professor at York University in Toronto, Canada. She says the best method to measure the exective control system is called the Stroop Test. A person is shown words in different colors. The person has to ignore the word but say the color. The problem is that the words are all names of colors. Her work shows that bilingual people continually practice this function. They have to, because both languages are active in their brain at the same time. They need to limit one to be able to speak in the other. This mental exercise might help in other ways, too. Researchers say bilingual children are better able to separate a word from its meaning, and more likely to have friends from different cultures. Bilingual adults are ofter four to five years later than others in developing dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Foreign language study has increased in the United States. But linguist Alison Mackey at Georgetown University points out that English-speaking countries are still far behind the rest of the world. In England, like in the United States, bilingualism is seen as something special and unique and something to be commented on and perhaps work towards, while in many other parts of the world being bilingual is just seen as a natural part of life. 61. Being bilingual can make people . A. smarter than others B. better at all skills C. better at controlling their attention D. higher in intelligence 62. According to the text, the Stroop Text . A. edables children mix up more words B. requests the person to remember the words of colors C. shows that bilingual people continually practice the executive control system D. proves bilingual people scored lower in intelligence tests 63. Bilingual children are more likely to . A. be healthier than others B. make more friends from different countries C. develop dementia or Alzheimer’s disease D. recognize a word from its meaning 64. The last paragraph suggests that . A. bilingualism is just seen as a natural part of life in the United States B. foreign language study needs improving in English-speaking countries C. bilingualism is seen as something special and unique all over the world D. English-speaking countries do better than others in foreign language study 65. The text is most probably a
