“With an estimated population of more than 20 million, Shanghai is officially China's largest and certainly its most dazzling city. But there is an environmental cost. Shanghai residents now use two and a half times more power per head than their rural cousins. The city's seemingly insatiable energy demands currently require the output of 17 power stations. ” this is from Wild China, a BBC documentary.
It is a reflection of the connection between a large number of migrant people pouring into the city and the environment. I personally believe it is a must during the process of urbanization. Although at the beginning of the reform and opening, it played an important rule in developing market economy, the negative influences can not be overlooked. Now it causes plenty of terrible consequences. Every aspect of people’s lives has been influenced.
First of all, as mentioned above, it is a great pressure for the environment and nature recourse. The increasing number of people need increasing amount of water and electricity supply. At the same time, they produce a large deal of waste that impacts the environment severely. Secondly, too many people in the city causes traffic congestion, which makes people have to spent much time on the road. Thirdly, there are social security problems, for it’s difficult to get a job in a big city, especially for those with low-level of education and those are apt to be emotional and violent.
Why so many people want to work and live in city? As far as I am concerned, there three major reasons: to begin with, there are more opportunities in the for one’s career development and wealth growth. As we all know, Beijing is the political center while shanghai is the economic center, and there are kinds of company there, fortune 500, joint venture, private company, etc. people usually go to theses big city to seek for better personal development. Furthermore, the social service of city is better, such as, education, medical care, and housing. The best primary school and high school mostly located in the city, and there are advanced teaching facilities, veteran teachers. Hospital is exactly the same. Last but not least, it is concerned with household registration. Some rural villagers want a urban household registration. They are self-abased or not satisfied with rural household registration.
It is widely recognized that some metropolises can not bear the pressure that increasing population has brought. In Beijing, it takes hours to get to work during the rush hours. And the air quality is the worst in the world. We have to take action to relieve the tension. In my opinion, there are three aspect to work on. First, the government should introduce new policy to limit the number of the people going into the city through economic leverage. For example, lower the loan interest in the rural place to attract business. Second, the government should invest in improving the public service in the suburban. Third, the government should integrate the urban and rural household registration. If there is only one kind of household registration, people from the rural is the same with those living in the city. And household registration won’t become a reason to go to the city.
