Dozens of people were waiting in long lines at checkouts(付款台) to pay for their goods. The woman standing in cashier(收银员) Jeffrey Kandt’s line seemed poor. Her clothes were worn. She held a single item in her arms as she patiently waited to move to the front of the line. Her son would get the one present he had asked for: a Sony PlayStation 2. She had saved all year for this; with tax, the total would be $220. As Kandt scanned (扫描) the game player’s bar code(条形码) into his register(收银机), the woman panicked. Where was her money? It wasn’t where she remembered putting it earlier in the day. Her fear became obvious to the customers in line behind her as she started to cry. “Why my line”, Kandt thought as he watched the anxious woman search through her clothes. He was going to have to call his manager to cancel the sale and return the game player. He’d have to shut down his checkout line and wait for her to come – not something that any store manager or cashier wants on Christmas Eve. “I’m going to be late for church,” Kandt thought. And then an amazing thing happened. At the back of the line, a man took out his wallet, pulled out $100 and passed it forward. As the cash moved up the line, a twenty-dollar bill was added here, a ten-dollar bill there. When the collection finally reached the register, Kandt counted $220 and there are still $15 left. Strangers had fulfilled a poor woman's Christmas wish to give her son his dream gift. And Jeffrey Kandt wasn't late for church. The people in his line in the Cleburne, Texas, Wal-Mart on Christmas Eve 2002 had become one. 56. According to the passage the woman couldn’t pay because ___. From the passage, we know that ___. A. Kandt was late for church at last B. the woman’s son got his favorite presents C. all customers were busy going home D. the manager solve the problem quickly B You probably know you should say “ please” and “thank you ” at restaurants. You probably know the rules of a library. You know you should respect and be nice to your classmates. But do you have music manners? Keep It Down! You have to notice the volume of your music. You should not play your music so loud that everyone around you can hear it. Some people might even get angry. Usually, when you play the music loud on an MP3 player, other people can’t hear the words of the song. They just hear a loud sound. Not one wants to listen to this. Very loud music can also be bad for your ears, so even if you are alone when listening to our MP3 player, you shouldn’t have it turned up too high. Take Them off! You need to know when to turn your MP3 player off and put it away. Libraries and schools don’t allow MP3 players. There are other places, like museums, that don’t have rules, but it would be rude to have your MP3 player on. Sometimes, it just doesn’t make sense to listen to your MP3 player at event. Why would you listen to music at a play, a movie or a sporting event? You would miss what is going on and others would wonder why you even came. Take One Out! Once in a while it’s okay just to take out one earphone and not other. Imagine you are listening to your MP3 player when someone asks you the way. It would not be rude to take out one earphone, tell him the way, and put back the earphone and continue listening. You can also do this when you order food at a fast-food restaurant or when you answer the telephone and it’s not for you. It’s Your Choice! There are times when you need to decide what is the best. For example, some people can listen to music on their MP3 Players when reading books, while others think it is disturbing. In cases like this, you need to do what seems right for you. 61. The underlined word “volume” in Paragraph Two probably means . A. the type of music B. the words of a song C. the amount of a sound D. the length of a song 62. We should turn down the music when we are alone because loud music . A. is not enjoyable B. makes us tired C. people will think you are rude D. hurts our ears 63. If we listen to our MP3 player at a play, . A. we will miss part of the play B. other people might get angry C. others won’t hear the play well D. the theater won’t allow it 64. We can take one earphone out except when we . A. show others the way B. answer the phone that’s not for us C. order food at a fast-food restaurant D. watch a sporting event 65. A tiny exposure to peanuts can mean big trouble for a person with a peanut allergy. Some people die from the exposure. But a tiny exposure may help scientists find a cure. It’s to early to say for a certain, so if you have a peanut allergy, do not try this at home. But the first results look promising(有希望的). Two teams of scientists have been experimenting on a group of 29 children, with an average age of 5, who are allergic to peanuts. At the beginning of the study, each kid received less than 1/1,000th of a peanut per day. Over the course of the study, the children gradually increased the number of peanuts in their diets. Ten of the children have been received the treatment for two years. Half of those ten now appear to be free of their peanut allergies, says Wesley Burks, a pediatric allergist. These five kids can eat peanuts without problem. “They are putting peanuts in their diet,” Burks says. The two teams of scientists are now doing a follow-up study on two groups of children with the allergy. Children in one group will receive the gradual peanut treatment, and the others will not. Burks and the other researchers hope this study will help them learn if
