Many product companies use specific colors to cause positive emotions and compete for a sale. However, sight is not the only sensory (感官的) retail that companies use. Sounds and smells can also influence consumers’ purchasing decisions. Nobel Prize-winning research shows that our sense of smell has great power to cause an emotional response. A study published earlier this year compared purchasing in a French flower shop when the smell of lavender (薰衣草) was given off and when it wasn’t. It found that the smell increased the number of consumers’ purchasing items and the amount of their purchases. An earlier study using Nike shoes found that consumers desired the shoes more, and were willing to pay more, when the room had a mixed smell of flowers. Realizing the subconscious impact of smell, many stores apply artificial scents (气味) through their heating and air-conditioning vents (通风口) or place scent machines above their doors. For instance, a coconut scent might make that bikini more appealing as you long for a vacation. Ever felt frenzied due to a store’s fast-paced music? Or calmed by a piece of light music? A retailer’s choice of music can have a big impact on consumers’ moods. One study found that when subjected to loud music, consumers will spend less time in a store. But interestingly, the researchers did not find a difference in sales or customers’ satisfaction. Another interesting finding from a recent study was that customers actually shop longer when exposed to unfamiliar music. Just as department stores use different scents in certain departments, many use different music in some areas to appeal to varying consumers. Well, you could always leave the store and take a break, but the food court probably isn’t your best choices as brands like Cinnabon and Panera Bread also use scents as part of their customers’ experience. Online retailers (零售商) use a variety of other strategies to get your business, but you can always neglect those and enjoy the familiar scents of home. 1、The passage is mainly about ________. B.It influences how long consumers stay in a shop. C.It gives consumers the satisfaction of enjoying shopping. Her high school graduation is just days away. She goes to Guatemala in the summer to work there with her church. Then, in the fall, she will head to Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania. But that is not why she is smiling right now. Tonight, in a beautiful long dress, with her hair perfectly curled, she is excited to be going to prom. A prom is a formal dance for high school students that’s usually at the end of the year. Prom was born in the United States more than 100 years ago and has spread to other parts of the world. In America, it has become an industry similar to the wedding business. A study done by the American financial company, Visa, found that, on average, an American family spends more than 900 dollars on prom. Much of it is spent on what the young adults wear to the formal dance. Gowns (礼服) often cost hundreds of dollars. And then there are costs linked to hair and makeup, flowers for prom dates, dinner and transportation. It adds up. But some students find ways to make the event less expensive. “I borrowed my dress,” says Maggie Kinnett. Like Hope, Maggie is a senior at Yorktown High School in Arlington. She got her makeup done without cost by a professional who is a family friend. Hope also cuts costs. She bought her dress online for far less than she would have paid in the stores. She also did her own hair. Besides, many girls choose to get ready for the prom with friends. They might get their hair done at a beauty shop together. They might hire a professional make-up artist for a few hours to share the costs. Probably the least costly thing about prom is the ticket to the dance. Yorktown held its event at a hotel in Arlington. The tickets were $ 45. 1、What makes Hope cheerful at present? A.The coming college life. B.The ball of high school graduation. C.Her attractive dress and curled hair. D.Her coming high school graduation. 2、Why did Maggie ask a friend to do her makeup? A.To save money. B.To get the best effect. C.To win a prize in the ball. D.To compete with other students. 3、What did Hope do to save money for the ball? A.She shared the cost of makeup with others. B.She rented her dress online. C.She did her hair by herself. D.She got the ticket for free. 4、What can we learn from the text? A.Renting gowns online for prom has become a trend. B.Prom has become a heavy burden for most families. C.The author is against prom due to the high cost. D.Prom has grown as a rising economy as wedding business. 24.(8分)Researchers continue to show the power behind our sense of smell. Recent studies have found, among other things, that the smell of foods like pizza can cause uncontrollable anger in drivers on roads. The review explains that smell is unique in its effects on the brain. According to Conrad King, the researcher who carried out the review, “more than any other senses, the sense of smell goes through the logical part of the brain and acts on the systems concerned with feelings. This is why the smell of baking bread can destroy the best intentions of a dieter.” Smell, which dictates(决定) the unbelievable complexity of food tastes, has always been the least understood of our senses. Our noses are able to detect up to 10,000 distinct smells. Our ability to smell and taste this extremely large range of smells is controlled by something like 1,000 genes (基因), which make up an amazing 3% of the human genome. Researchers Richard Axel and Linda Buck were together awarded a Nobel Prize in 2004 for their ground-breaking research on the nature of this extraordinary sense. These two scientists were the first to describe the family of 1,000 olfactory (嗅觉) genes and to explain how our olfactory system works. According to one study in the research review, smelling fresh pizza or even the packaging of fast foods can be enough to make drivers feel impatient with other road users. They are then more likely to speed and experience uncontrollable anger on roads. The most reasonable explanation is that these can all make drivers feel hungry, and therefore desperate to satisfy their appetites. In contrast, the smells of peppermint and cinnamon were shown to improve concentration levels as well as reduce drivers’ impatience. Similarly, the smells of lemon and coffee appeared to promote clear thinking and mental focus. However, the way genes regulate smell differs from person to person. A study by researchers in Israel has identified at least 50 olfactory genes which are switched on in some people and not in others. They believe this may explain why some of us love some smells and tastes while others hate them. The Israel researchers say their study shows that nearly every human being shows a different pattern of active and inactive smell-detecting receptors. 1、What did Richard Axel and Linda Buck find out? A.The type of food smells. B.The logical part of human brain. C.The nature of human olfactory system. D.The relationship between food and feelings. 2、Which of the following can help people concentrate? A.Bread. B.Pizza. C.Coffee. D.Fast food. 3、What do we know from the last paragraph? A.Some people can recognize up to 50 smells. B.Every person has a different pattern of genes. C.Different people are sensitive to different smells. D.There are still some olfactory genes to be found out. 4、What is the passage mainly about? A.Logic and behavior. B.Smell and its influence. C.Sense ability and food tastes.
