People can clear the information away on the light-printable paper by heating it to 120°C and it can be reused more than 80 times. The research was carried out in order to reduce the effects of paper production on deforestation (滥砍滥伐). The researchers, from Shandong University in China and the University of California, Riverside, said that the secret behind the technology is a color-changing chemical. A thin coating of the chemical can be used on usual paper and turn it into a reusable, light-printable one. Heating the paper for 10 minutes can help clear the information away more quickly. Professor Yadong Yin, a chemistry professor at the University of California and a co-author of the study, said, “The greatest importance of our work is the development of a new technology to produce an ink-free rewritable paper that has the same feel and appearance as usual paper. Our work is believed to have great economic and environmental influences on the modem society.” Paper production has a bad influence on the environment. It’s the main cause of industrial pollution and paper thrown away by people makes up about 40% of landfills where waste is buried under the ground. It is predicted that light-printable paper will be inexpensive in the future. The printing process is also more cost-effective than the usual one as no ink is needed. Most importantly, it can be reused many times, which greatly reduces the cost. 1.Why did researchers do the research? A.To make more money by selling the paper. B.To save more ink and more money. C.To make people interested in writing on the paper. D.To stop people from cutting down more trees. 2.What does the underlined word “it” refer to? A.Usual paper. B.The chemical. C.The technology. C.The research will make a difference to our economic development. D.Our environment will be influenced by the rewritable paper. 4.What are the advantages of the rewritable paper? a. It can be recycled many times. b. It can help save money. c. It is environmentally-friendly. d. It will help save time. If Dick Drew had listened to his boss in 1925, we might not have an important product: a new type of tape. Drew worked for the Minnesota Mining Company. At work he developed a kind of material strong enough to hold things together. But his boss told him not to think more about the idea. Finally, using his own time, Drew improved the tape, which now is used everywhere by many people. And his old company learned from its mistake. Now it encourages people to spend 15 percent of their work time just thinking and developing new ideas. Creativity is not something one is just born with, nor is it necessarily a character of high intelligence (智慧). Just because a person is highly intelligent does not mean that he uses it creatively. Creativity is the matter of using the resources one has to produce new ideas that are good for something. Unluckily, schools have not tried to encourage creativity. With strong attention to test results and the development of reading, writing and mathematical skills, many educators give up creativity for correct answers. The result is that children can give back information but can’t recognize ways to use it in new situations. They may know the rules correctly, but they are unable to use them to work out practical problems. It is important to give children choices. From the earliest age, children should be allowed to make decisions and understand their results. Even if it’s choosing between two kinds of food for lunch, decision-making helps thinking skills. As children grow older, parents should let their children decide how to use their time or spend their money, but not help them too much if they make the wrong decision. The child may have a hard time, but that is all right. This is because the most important character of creative people is a very strong desire (欲望) to find a way out of trouble. 1.What did the company where Dick Drew work learn from its mistake? A.They encouraged people to work a longer time. B.They discouraged (阻碍) people to think freely. C.They asked people to spend all their work time developing new ideas. D.They encouraged people to spend some of their work time thinking and improving new ideas. 2.Why don’t schools try to encourage creativity? A.They don’t understand the importance of education. B.They don’t want their students to make mistakes. C.They pay too much attention to examination marks and language skills. D.They think it more important to remember some information. 3.What should the parents do when their children decide how to spend their money? A.Try to help them as much as possible B.Take no notice of whatever they do C.Help them if their decision is wrong, but not too much D.Leave them as they are 4.The best title for the passage can be ______. A.The importance of creativity B.What is creativity? C.The history of creativity D.How can we develop creativity? C 15、Our voice gives away a lot of information about ourselves. It can tell us our gender(性别)and age. And now, scientists say that it can also tell us our height. Scientists at Washington University, Indiana University and University of California found that listeners could accurately tell the height of speakers, just by their voices. And the key to this mystery is a sound known as the subglottal resonance(声门下共振). Itdeepenswith height and helps us build a mental picture of a person. “The best way to think about subglottal resonances is to imagine blowing into a glass bottle with water. The less water in the bottle, the lower sound,” said John Morton, a scientist at Washington University. And it’s the same for humans. The frequency of the subglottal resonance depends on the height. The taller we are, the deeper the resonance frequency is. In order to find out whether people could identify the resonance, scientists did experiments. A number of same-sex pairs of different heights were told to read the same sentence aloud. It was played back to listeners who had to choose which one of the pairs was taller. Then, other listeners had to rank the speakers from the shortest to the tallest. The listeners were able to identify the tall people 62.1% of time, much higher than a lucky guess. Why not try the experiment yourself? Find out if your tall friends have deeper voices. 1.The scientists in some American universities found that people’s voices ________. A.change more quickly as they get older B.can tell the height of the speaker C.sound different when they have water in their mouth D.can tell the speaker’s gender, age and weight 2.The underlined word deepensmight mean ________ in Chinese. A.变得刺耳 B.变得高亢 C.变得低沉 D.变得甜美 3.According to the study, taller people usually have a ________ voice. A.deeper B.louder C.lower D.higher 4.Which of the following is TRUE? A.Our voice is made up of the subglottal resonance. B.The people tested in the experiments were of different-sex pairs. C.A person’s voice is greatly different even when reading the same sentence. D.Listeners’ ability to identify taller speaker is much higher than a lucky guess. 5.The best title of the passage might be ________. A.How to Be Taller B.Our Voice Tells Our Height C.An Experience about Voice D.Something about Subglottal Resonance D 16、It’s good to make mistakes, and here is why. First of all, mistakes are a clear sign that you are trying new things. It’s always good to try new things because when you are trying new things you are growing. If you never try anything new, how can you improve? How can you make yourself stronger? The simple answer is “You can’t.” Look around you. With very few exceptions(例外), either everything you see in your world or every single detail of every single thing is the result of someone trying something new. Another good thing about mistakes is this: When you are making mistakes, you are learning.Consider this: Edison failed 10,000 times before he perfected the light bulb. When asked how it felt to fail that many times, he said that he hadn’t failed 10,000 times, but rather had learned 10,000 things that didn’t work. Finally, when you make a mistake you are much closer to success. Why? Because when all is said and done, you will have tried some numbers of things before you succeed.Every time you make a mistake, youeliminateone of those things and are one step closer. But this all doesn’t mean that you should go ahead without considering the consequences(后果) of a mistake. However, when you try something new you have to be willing to set some reasonable limits(限度) so that in the event that it doesn’t work out the way you want it to, you will be in a normal place to try again. We all have limited time and money so don’t blow them all on one problem. Realize that it probably won’t be perfect the first time and deal with these resources(资源) properly so you can learn, make corrections, and try it again. If you accept and use your mistakes in this way ,you can make great progress in your business and your career. There is an old saying that goes, “If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not trying hard enough.” So go ahead and make mistakes. And learn. And grow. And succeed. 1.From the second paragraph, we can know that _______. A.mistakes are unnecessary for development B.we are afraid of trying new thing C.it’s common for people to make mistakes D.mistakes are better than not trying 2.The underlined word “eliminate” means _______. A.study B.remove C.accept D.solve 3.According to the article, one thing you should pay attention to about making mistakes is_____. A.not making the same mistakes B.accepting the punishment willingly C.taking consequences into consideration D.trying things out one by one 4.What would the writer probably suggest we say to ourselves when we make a mistake? A.Never mind, I can always try again. B.I’d better stay out of trouble. C.Ok! Now I can learn something. D.Look at this mess. Anyone would be sad.
