从1903-1909年胡峻校长制定的“仰副国家，造就通才”，到1922-1924年吴玉章校长提出的“崇尚学术，启用新派”，从1926-1930年张澜校长倡导的“学术自由，兼容并包”，到1933-1946年张凌高校长实行的“培养高尚品格，教授高深学术，造就专门人才，适应社会需要”在历代川大老校长们的精辟概括和深遂思考中，始终蕴含着一个恒久不变、一脉相传的价值取向，这就是涵乾纳坤的宏大气魄，追求真理的崇高境界，报效祖国的赤子情怀。这种价值取向，集中体现了川大人对科学的态度，对社会的责任和对理想的追求今天，我们响亮地提出“崇尚学术，追求卓越”和“厚德博学，虚心从善”的理念和精神，正是对学校传统精神的继承和弘扬。 大学的天职在于人材培养。大学的价值要得到社会的认可，就必须培养社会需要的人才，这是衡量大学对国家、对社会贡献大小的重要尺度。四川大学是在教育救国的历史背景下诞生的，输入世界智识，创获现代智慧，光大科学文明，培养杰出英才是四川大学始终不渝的理想和追求。在中国特别是西部地区高等教育发展史上，川大人书写了自己辉煌的篇章，创造了很多第一：在中国，1911年建立的华西协合牙科医院，第一个开创了现代口腔医学及教育，成为中国现代口腔医学的发源地；1936年开始招收研究生，成为中国第一批培养研究生的大学之一；1953年，创建了全国第一个高分子专业；1992年，第一个在全国高校中获得宗教学博士学位授权点。在西南，川大于1906年第一个开办了现代体育教育，1910年第一个实施了现代通识教育，1910年第一个引进外籍教师来校教学，1914年第一个设立了系统的英语课程。110年来，川大先后汇聚了文学家李劼人、物理学家吴大猷、生物学家童第周、历史学家顾颉刚、哲学家冯友兰、美学家朱光潜、中国最杰出的植物学家方文培、中国公共卫生之父陈志潜、中国近代数论的创始人柯召、中国高分子学科创建者徐僖等等大师巨匠，他们广育英才，德渥群芳。历史上，从川大校园走出来的朱德元帅，成为了共和国的开国元勋；郭沫若、巴金成为了文坛巨匠；江竹筠、毛英才成为了感动中国、感动世界的一代英烈；川大培养的第一位女博士乐以成，成为了中国现代妇产科学的开拓者和先驱。在今天，毕业于我们校园的84级校友宋永华，在留英华人中第一个当选为英国皇家工程院院士，并成为布鲁奈尔大学副校长。
