( Reuters, Wednesday March 1 1:58 PM ET) - A gunman wounded up to five people in a Pittsburgh suburb on Wednesday, police said, the day after a 6-year-old boy shot and killed a classmate in an incident that stunned America. Television networks reported the gunman was held up in a nearby building and could be holding five hostages. "We do have four of the victims. They are all listed in critical condition right now." an official at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center told CNN television. A fifth person was also in critical condition at another hospital. Pittsburgh police said the gunman shot three people in a McDonald’s restaurant in Wilkinsburg, then went to a Burge King next door and shot one more person. It was not clear where the fifth person was shot. A woman who lived nearby told CNN an armed man walked into her apartment before the shooting took place and told her: "I’ll be dead in ten minutes." "He said, "Well, I’m not gonna hurt any black people, I’m gonna kill all white people," she said. He then left the apartment, she added. Police said there were SWT teams and negotiators in the area where buildings were being evacuated. It was not clear what provoked the attack and details of the incident were sketchy. An FBI agent told CNN: " Right now it’s a rapidly evolving situation. We have personnel on the scene from a number of agencies." The incident was the latest in s string of shootings to jolt the United States. The killing of the 6-year-old at an elementary school in Michigan on Tuesday prompted President Clinton to appeal to the American electorate to make tighter gun control laws an issue of the 2023 presidential election. Vice President Al Gore ( news - web sites ), declaring " enough is enough," cited the death of the first grader in blasting the pro-gun lobby for blocking enactment of " common sense" gun controls. Passage 2 Dressed for Success What started out as a simple salad dressing in Europe has tickled the taste buds so wildly in Japan that it now has its own "Olympics". More than 1,000 people entered the Mayolympics with their original recipes for using mayonnaise, which is eaten more by the Japanese than anywhere else in the world outside the United States. One hundred finalists were selected to present their creations to a paned of cooking school teachers, head chefs, and food company bosses. The winner was a 21-year-old confectioner who blended mayonnaise with sweetened white lotus bean paste and spread it between two small pancakes to make a sweet mayo burger. Until the 1980s, mayonnaise was just something to add to the salad. But then come the mayonnaise sushi boom with creations such as the California salad roll. That mayonnaise compliments soy sauce made it appear in many other Japanese dishes such as cold noodles, stir-fry dishes and as a dip for dried squid. The average Japanese devours 1.8kg of mayonnaise a year. Instead of tomato sauce, there is a mayonnaise-based pizza. The best-selling convenience store bread is mayonnaise and corn flavored. Some people flavor their pancakes, custard puddings and chocolate chip cookies with mayonnaise. The cult followers of the condiment carry around "MY Mayo", their personal mini squirt bottle around everywhere they go. Though not available on the market yet there are attempts to perfect the mayo pearl. A scientist in Fukui Prefecture has invented a method of using the glossiness of mayonnaise to put the sheen on a pearl. He puts household ingredients in an aquarium tank to recreate the environment of an oyster shell. Then he squirts in the mayo. Next he takes two tiny round balls and dips them into the swirling liquid. After five days, he has two shiny pearls. He sets it in an 18K gold ring and it looks like a marvelous replica although one pawnshop owner said that it was a bit too yellow. Maybe a little less egg yolk would produce the next jewelry sensation.
