Lesson 44 Christmas with Jenny
This text can tell students something about an important western festival,Christmas. Students can know how Jenny spent Christmas. Besides, they can differ Christmas and Spring Festival. Furthermore, they can feel the cultural differences betweeen western countries and China.
Teaching goals: Let students talk about their favourite festivals.
Let students master some useful expressions about Christmas.
Teaching difficulties:
Use different tenses to express ideas.
Ask students to share their favourite festivals with their classmates and state reasons. Let students think about how to give best wishes to others.
Teaching periods: Two periods
Teaching aids: some pictures, some small presents,a recording
Teaching procedure:
Period 1
Step 1: Revision
Have some students tell something about their favourite festivals. It can help other students know more about different fstivals.
While one student is talking , let the others listen and correct some mistakes.
Step 2: Warming up
Play a beautiful English song. Let student listen carefully and say out what they get from thesong. Students must think of a western festival, Christmas. And they can know it is winter. It is very cold in winter. But students can feel the warmth from the song. Ask them to follow the tape and sing the song.
Step 3: Ask students how much they know about Christmas. Let students discuss freely. Think of some information about this festival. Here are some clues for students:
1. When is Christmas?
2. How do westerns spend this Festival?
3. What are the differences between Christmas and Spring Festival?
Step 4: Do “Think About It!”
Let students think about the questions as following. Share their ideas with the classmates.
1. Do you like to give gifts? To whom do you like to give them?
2. Do you like Christmas? Why or why not?
Step 5: Show some pictures about Christmas. Teach students new words and phrases.

Step 6: Listening
Play the rrecording. Let students listen carefully and answer some questions.
1. Why is Christmas Jenny’s Favourite festival?
2. What does Jenny forget to bring?
3. Want does Jenny say to Li Ming?
After students answer the questions,check their answers. Help students catch the main idea of the text.
Period 2
Step 1: Reading
Play the tape. Have students listen and repeat. Emphasize the pronunciation of some words.
Ask them to read the whole text very well.
Step 2: Discussion
Have students talk about their favourite festivals. Collect students’ ideas towards different festivals.
Step 3: Expain the key knowledge points in the text. Help them understand the content of this lesson.

Step 5: Writing

Homework:
Let students collect the names of festivals as many as possible. Try to get more information about different festivals.
