Objectives
Because a number of the CNLB client group was visually impaired, we were required to rethink our consultation methods. Presentation required tactile and auditory communication. The focus of communication shifted from visual aids to models, tactile plans and diagrams, Braille, mock-ups,large samples, and spoken word.
Glare decreases visibility and places strain on the eyes, and indoor light was to be commensurate with daylight. Miky translucent wall panels were used in place of glass to minimize glare. A central two-storey space, housing the café and open stairs, brings natural light into the core and spine of the building and provides orientation within the building.
The highest level of accessibility was essential for the CNIB. Making use of the drastic grade change of the 4-acre site, the CNIB features two ground floors, maximizing accessibility. A central circulation spine locates program areas along both sides. Boundaries, paths, and destinations are defined through texture, colour, and acoustical changes.
Designing for all senses, the gardens are most spectacular, each with a unique personality, scent and mood: the Fragrant Garden on the east with its planning, seating and water feature; the boisterous western terrace with its wide views; and the north Shade Garden on the ravine’s edge.
