三、阅读理解
An Iranian Woman Won Nobel Prize
Iranian lawyer and activist Shirin Ebadi was awarded the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize on October 10 for her long fight for human rights, especially for the rights of women and children in her native land, becoming the first Iranian and the first Muslim woman to win the honor.
Ebadi was chosen over such contenders (竞争者) as Pope John Patti and former Czech President Vaclav Havel. The Nobel committee praised her work for nonviolent reform and described her as a beacon (灯塔) of hope for Muslims everywhere.“She sees no conflict between Islam and fundamental human rights,” committee chairman Ole Danbolt Mjoes said in making the announcement in Olso.“It is a pleasure to award the Peace Prize to a woman who is part of the Muslim world and of whom that world can be proud.”
News of the surprising choice reached the 56yearold Ebadi while she was on a trip to Paris to attend a conference on Iranian films.During a news conference in the French capital, she showed calmness she honed (磨炼) as Iran’s first female judge and later as a lawyer, writer and lecturer. “The duty of life is to fight in a difficult situation,as there is in Iran,” Ebadi told journalists. “If today,as a woman and lawyer,I was living in a country in which all the rights of women were respected,I wouldn’t be as proud of myself as I am today.” Dressed in a black suit and wearing lipstick, the little Ebadi did not wear the traditional headscarf (头巾) required in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Iran’s President Mohammad Khatami on October 14 welcomed the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to Ebadi.“There is no one who does not delight in the success of a compatriot (同胞),” Khatami told journalists after leaving parliament, adding that “obviously I am pleased that a compatriot has achieved such success.I hope that this achievement will serve the general interest of the people, the world peace and humanity (人类).”

四、根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How to use speed reading to go through newspapers or magazines? 1. ________You will not only save time, but also your focus will increase and you will have fun reading even the uninteresting reports.
2.________This plays to the advantage of the tired reader who wants to stay current but has very little time to read. Often all you need to understand a news piece is the first paragraph. Here the reporter will tell you what’s happening, who it’s happening to and where it’s happening.
Sometimes you don’t even need to read the entire paragraph because the first sentence or the first couple of sentences give you all the information. If you still have more time you can move on to step two.3.________Read the last paragraph. Some news pieces are followups of events that were earlier reported. In such a situation, the first paragraph may not give you all the information you need.4.________It’s usually in the last paragraph that the user is given the background information that leads to the story.
Read the “quotes” after you’ve read the first and the last paragraphs and you still feel you need more information or have more time to play with, you can come into middle of the piece by reading the direct speech of the sources of the news item. In all forms of writing where quotations are used, the writer leads the reader into the quotes and then leads the reader out. This takes too much space and therefore, robs the reader of some precious time.
5.________
A. Read the first paragraph.
B. But the last paragraph will do the job.
C. The first paragraph may be not important at all.
D. Otherwise, you can stop reading.
E. Here are three techniques you can use.
F. So glide directly to the quotation marks and read what’s within them.
G. If you follow these steps, it’s possible to get about 80 percent of a news piece.
