Jesse was a great teacher, tutor, mentor, and family member. He was a dedicated(忠诚的) volunteer in the Peace Corps in Guinea, West Africa. He went to a place where he knew he could make a difference and wanted to help teach children who otherwise would not have a teacher. He made friends wherever he went and touched the hearts of many.
Jesse was never one to go anywhere without making a good impression on everyone he met. His sudden death in a tragic car accident in Africa brought his family and friends together in a celebration of his life. They came from all over the world:Africa, Canada, and the US. The church was filled with people who knew that Jesse had made a difference in their lives, in the lives of the children, and in the hearts of his loved ones.
Jesse volunteered for the Peace Corps to help educate children in Guinea, Africa. Guinea is a very poor and complex country where tribalism(种族主义) is strong. Each tribe that Jesse worked with wanted him to commit(致力于)to one or the other.
Jesse would not surrender(投降)to tribalism when he took an African name. Each of the two tribes in which he taugh insisted that he choose their name. However, he solved the problems by combining both of the tribes' names into one.
Jesse was a light to all who knew him. We will always remember the joy and love he brought to his work, to his family and his friends. The people who loved Jesse are planning to build a school in Guinea in his honour. So his work will continue.

Candy Bruton, 56, a Delta Air Lines flight attendant flies about 90 hours over the course of 16 days a month.
Flying hours are only part of the time attendants spend on the job. Bruton explained that they also are required to put in “ground time”. They arrive about an hour before the flight takes off to make sure that the cabin is ready to go, the galley(厨房)is fully stocked and all the required safety equipment is aboard and working. At the airport, Bruton and her fellow flight attendants are the first people on the plane and the last ones off.
For sports charters(包机), attendants distribute welcoming snacks and drinks as the athletes, coaches and team officials board the plane, then provide nonstop service in the air. They hand deliver everything—no carts in the aisles. Because the same attendants are often assigned to the same teams, they get to know what people eat and drink. “They don't have to ask,” Bruton said.
For a regularly scheduled flight, attendants help passengers put away their carryon bags and get settled so the plane can depart on time. In the air, they fill requests and continually check on the passengers, Bruton said.
“I like to pick a couple of passengers and get to know them,” she said, “It's always the people. In the air, you're never alone. I've developed lifelong friend ships with other flight attendants and passengers.”
The job is not just about service. “A lot of what we do is safetyrelated,” Bruton said. In 36 years of flying, Bruton said she'd seen only two emergencies, both of which were minor incidents that did not endanger anyone on the plane.
6.It is not necessary for Bruton to ________.
A.arrive at the airport before the flight takes off
B.hand out food and drinks and help away carryon bags
C.chat with passengers on the plane
D.check on the passengers' requests and serve them
答案:C 从第五段“I like to pick a couple of passengers...”可知,和乘客聊天并不是布鲁顿分内的工作。
7.What do we learn about Bruton from the passage?
A.She is keen on her job as an attendant.
B.She has been an attendant when she was twentyone.
C.She is not only an attendant but also a maintenance worker.
D.She is in charge of serving coaches and team officials.
答案:A B项文中未提到;根据第二段第二句可知,确认客舱、厨房及安全设备的正常工作是乘务员的本职工作,故排除C项;D项仅适用于sports charters的情况,故选A项。
8.From the last paragraph we learn that the main characteristic an attendant needs is ________.
A.a sense of responsibility
