The Difference of the Perception of Human Rights
Between China and Western
Abstract: As a living specimen in cross-cultural communication, the film "Skin-Scraping" has mainly reflected the various conflicts in the process of cross-cultural communication between China and the Western, of which the conflict of the concept of human rights between the China and the Western has been throughout the conflict can be said of the film from beginning to end, which mainly reflected in three aspects : the education of their children in families raise their in the Western healing therapies, the traditional Chinese and Western medicine treatment, and the rights of pregnant women and fetuses. However, at the same time, the ends of the movie also has showed that as long as the people from different cultural backgrounds carry out actively the exchanges and the dialogue, and overcome the communication barriers, the various contradictions and conflicts in cross-cultural communication can be coordinated and reconciled.
Key words: cross-cultural; human rights; Guasha;
As one of the most popular films released in 2001, Guasha Treatment made the culture differences between China and the west be a hot topic because of the sharp clashes reflected in the film.
The film Guasha Treatment tells us a story in America about problems happened on a Chinese immigration family. The family uses Guasha——a traditional Chinese therapy to cure their child of illness. But the purple scar left by the treatment is considered to be evidence of abusing child. With cultural communication and permeation, cultural shock and conflict as the theme, through the analysis of misunderstanding and conflict, the article aims to reveal eastern and western cultural differences in thinking models, interpersonal relationship and awareness of law, to attempt to avoid cultural conflict and to further shorten the cultural gap.
Ⅰ. The Human Rights in Medical
In the movie, Dennis got a fever and his grandfather can not understand the introductions on the medicine bottle, so he did the Chinese traditional Guasha treatment for Dennis. However, the American doctors found the bruise on the back of Dennis, and they think Dennis was ill-treated; the children’s human rights were invaded, so they called 911.
The most conspicuous traits between Chinese and Western medicine is that China focus on entirety, it treats the body and life one block, and therefore they pay attention to collective human rights. But the Americans think the individual rights is more important, it is also the centre of the society, and the goal of society is individual happiness.
Ⅱ. The Human Rights in Children’s Education
In the beginning of the story, Datong's son Dennis hit the boss's son Paul. Datong immediately calls Dennis to apologize to Paul, but Quinlan thinks that fighting is normal and there is no question of the apology. Datong fights his son in front of the boss because his son did not apologize to the boss's son, and says: “Hitting him because he is my child, I beat him is to respect you. It’s to give you face” This is incredible for the boss; while Datong view that this is a performance of loving the son and respecting for the boss.
According Chinese tradition, parents view children as their lives continue, hoping that children will amount to anything and achieve their wishes or be successful. Thus, in the views of the Chinese parents, some blame or beating on the children is one of love for their children, which are full of the expectation of their children to become useful. So we have thousands of years old maxims: “The lack of children's education is the fault of father”, “Children who don't suffer pains and curses will be not capable” and other ideas and concepts. In Western's eyes, this kind of behavior is very strange. West countries emphasize democracy and freedom, which are not only performance of national, racial, but also present in many families. In a West family, each member including male and female, regardless of age, is equal and each member is entitled to full democracy and freedom.
There is no denying the fact that we will confront many culture clashes during the, just like the film performed. At the same time, they are not the clashes that we can not avoid. In the film, Quentin has made a through the way of coming to China and experiencing what’s Guasha. As a consequence, successful intercultural communications can be taken if people have the willing to know each other's culture.
