The tripartive personality analysis of Jane Eyre
Freud believed that personality has three structures: the id, the ego and the superego。 The cornerstone of a Freudian personality is the id. The id is the most basic part of a person's personality -- it is solely concerned with satisfying basic, day-to-day needs. The ego is the next layer of the personality. Your ego is what actually carries out the desires handed to it by the id。The superego is the most Advanced part of a person's personality These are the processes that worked the most effectively to solve your id's problems。
The tripartive personality theory can be used to analysis the personality in Jane Eyre。id is the "mad woman", ego is Jane Eyre, superego is the God (Mr.St.John). To understand the character of Jane Eyre.，We had to contact the other characters, especially the two female image of Helen Burns and Bertha Mason。
In the novel, Helen Burns and Jane have similar experience Helen often scolded or punished by the teacher because of forgoting to pack things. And Jane is always punished by Mr. Brocklehurst as a “lying child”. Secondly, they have common interest and pursuit, they are immersed in reading and thirst for knowledge。But Helen Burns is a more moral and idealized than Jane，she is the superego of Jane. When Jane get angry hysteria for suffering unjust treatment, it was always Helen Burns who comfort her patiently and teach her to be Tolerance, patience and obedience. She let Jane read the New Testament, She is a devout Christian. After she died ,Jane inherited her superego personality. Experiences at Lowood especially Helen`s impact, greatly changed Jane and purified her mind.
On the other hand , Bertha is also another personality in Jane`s Subconscious . She is the id , she is the wrathful Runaway Jane. Bertha and Jane both are oppressed by that society .like Jane Bertha also has tragic fate and bad treatment .she was bought from Jamaica to distant British by her husband , and locked in the top of the attic of Thornfield.Bertha is a mental patient, and a crazy women ,however ,what she did and said is just Jane want to in a way , all the crazy things is Jane`s basic, innate set of instincts. In fact.Bertha destructive action is a;so another side of character of Jane .different from Bertha ,Jane can`t do whatever she want to vent her discontent and hatred for the society.after Jane know about Bertha, she didn`t hate Bertha,she feel sympathy for her. She said to Mr. Rochester that lady he`s really ruthless for that unfortunate lady.
In summary,Helen Burns and Bertha Mason, the two characters is used not only to highlight the Jane's personality, but also respectively, to reflect the superego and Ig exist of jane.
