Roller Coaster Thrills Roller coasters may seem like a very modern type of entertainment, but they actually date back to the mid-1800s. Railways, built to transport coal from up in the mountains down to the town in Pennsylvania (宾夕法尼亚州), U.S., were hired out at weekends by fare-paying passengers riding just for fun. Nothing screams summertime as much as a roller coaster in the theme park. Occasionally, people have to queue for as long as eight hours for an average ride of under two minutes. What is it about roller coasters that some love so much? Enjoying roller coaster rides is linked to sensation seeking (追求感官体验) — the tendency to enjoy various, novel (新奇的) and intense physical experiences such as rock climbing and parachute jumping. But what sensation do roller coasters provide that is so exciting? At first glance, it may seem to be down to the experience of speed. However, the evidence for linking sensation seeking to speed is not clear. When it comes to speeding (超速), for example, not just sensation seekers do it. Perhaps the draw of roller coasters is the enjoyment of the sensation of fear itself, much like watching a horror movie. Physical signs of fear such as a pounding heart, faster breathing and an energy boost caused by the release of glucose (葡萄糖) are known as the “fight-or-flight response (战斗或逃跑反应).” A roller coaster ride is likely to produce this response. Bungee jumpers were reported to have raised levels of endorphins (内啡肽) in the brain. It is a chemical that can produce feelings of intense pleasure. The higher the levels of endorphins that were present, the more excited the jumper felt. This is clear evidence that people enjoy the sensations that accompany the “fight-or-flight response” in a safe environment. Though it is hard to pin down, people enjoy roller coasters due to a combination of speed, conquering fear and the positive effect associated with the rapid rise of endorphins in the brain. A roller coaster ride is a legal, generally safe and relatively cheap means of experiencing stress and pleasure. Understandably, people have been happy to pay money in exchange for doing it for centuries. A summary on Roller Coaster Thrills Handout I.
