My father is very careful with money. He hates spending it on anything he doesn’t think that we really need. I always wanted a cat of my own, but he wouldn’t buy one for me. When we walked past the local pet shop, I saw some cute little kitten in a cage and I asked my father to buy one for me. He shook his head, and said, “Look at the price, son! $100 each! We can’t afford to spend that much money on a cat.”
On the way home, we drove past the local car wash and there was a big new sign outside.

“Look at that, dad!” I said eagerly to my father. “Now we can have a free kitten.” My father replied. “It’s no free at all, Paul. I have to spend $30 on a car wash to get you that kitten. I never go to the car wash. It’s a waste of money. Whenever it rains, the rainwater washes our car for free. Why would I spend $30 when I can have it cleaned for nothing?”
Well, the days went by and it didn’t rain. Then the weeks went by without a cloud in the sky. Dad looked at the weather forecast every evening on the television, but there was no rain expected at all.
Our car was covered in dust and dirt and my mother said, “You take that car to the car wash. I’m not getting into it again until you do.” My father had no choice, he had to spend $30 at the car wash..
When we got there the sign was gone, and in its place was a new one:

Dad looked at me and I smiled. So my father got his car washed for free and I got my pet cat.

好，我们现在集中讨论究竟第二个告示是要顾客免费抱走猫再送洗车，还是卖猫送免费洗车呢？很多同学认为，猫在宠物店卖100元，洗车行如果送猫送洗车岂不是赔本的买卖，怎么会这么傻呢？所以肯定是卖猫。认为猫是免费送的的同学也有相当一部分是没有多加思考，而直接从take的表层义上理解而非深层理解的。实际上，我们可以有这样几个思考：第一，为什么洗车行老板要用猫来作为促销而不是其他物品？非生命物体作促销不是更方便吗？第二，为什么第一个告示说送小猫咪，到第二个告示时就变成了大猫了？只有一个推论：老板家猫患，猫崽太多了，不好养要送人，本打算洗车就送，算是顺水人情，结果送不出去，大家都怕养起来麻烦，小猫咪都变成大猫了还送不出去，只好用免费洗车来促销送猫。那么我们又有新的问题，干嘛要自己掏钱给人免费洗车来送猫呢，多的丢掉不就可以了吗？这就涉及到一个文化差异(culture gap)的问题。国外大多数人不会遗弃宠物，因为他们视宠物为家人，即便养不活也要交给放心的人养。这样我们就很好理解了。我们看下面这个从国外网站上截下的图文来作一个参考吧：
