Unit 3 Organization and Culture of a Company Background 1.Corporate culture Humans are social beings. This is how ideas and beliefs spread. In an ideal culture, people do the right thing, even when no one’s looking. Not because they’ll be punished or rewarded but because it’s the culturally accepted thing to do. Bottom-line advantages of a strong corporate culture include: l Motivation. l Low employee turnover/ reduced payroll cost. l Attendance. l Productivity. l Creative/ independent problem solving. l Ethics. l Personal accountability. l Enterprise value. 2. Have the students think about the questions—What departments do you know in a company? What are their basic functions? Give some hints if necessary. (2 min.) 2. Have the students complete the sentences according to their understanding. (4 min.) 3. Have the students listen to the recording and check their answers. (4 min.) (90 min.) Step 1 Have the students review what they have learned in Getting Ready and then look at the chart and guess what the missing names are. And then listen to the recording and fill in the names. Listening script of Step 1 & Step 2 Hello, everyone. Welcome! I’m Amy, and I’m the Personnel Manager. Each of you received a copy of the company organization. Let me show you how the company is organized. The company is run by the CEO— the Chief Executive Officer, and he is the biggest boss of the company. Our company is divided into six departments, each in the charge of a director who reports to the CEO directly. The departments are: HR, Finance, Production, Marketing, Sales and IT. The departments are divided further into sub-departments, and each sub-department has a manager, who reports to the department director. First, let’s look at HR. HR is divided into Personnel and Training. Personnel is responsible for recruitment, salaries, bonuses and so on, and Training looks after our training and development. Then we have Finance, whose department director is called the CFO—Chief Finance Officer. Finance is divided into two areas —Accounts and Controlling. Accounts deals with all the financial reports, including the company’s income and expenses. And Controlling makes sure everything runs in good order and condition. Then let’s see Production. It is the biggest department and it has four sub-departments. The Factory is where our products are manufactured. Purchasing is responsible for buying new materials and equipment. There’s R&D, which is in charge of testing new products, and there’s also Logistics, which stores and transports our products. The next department is Marketing. It has three sub-departments: Market Research, Advertising and PR—Public Relations. Then comes Sales Department. It’s made up of two parts: Sales and Customer Service.
