One day, a raven(渡鸦）happened to fly past a lake. Looking at the lake, he saw the most beautiful animal he had ever seen. It was a swan(天鹅)and its feathers(羽毛）were as white as snow. Some people think they have an answer to the problems of heavy traffic and pollution in large cities. Their answer is the bicycle, or “bike”. In many cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work everyday. In New York City, some bike riders have even formed a group called Bike for a Better City. They say that if more people ride bikes to work, there will be fewer cars in the city and therefore less dirty air from cars.
For several years this group has been trying to get the city government to help bike riders. For example, they want the city to paint special lanes (车道) for bikes only¾on some of the main streets, because when bike riders must use the same lanes as cars, there may be accidents. Bike for a Better City feels that if there were special lanes, more people would use bikes.
But no bike lanes have been painted yet. Not everyone thinks they are a good idea. Taxi drivers don’t like the idea¾they say it will slow traffic. Some store owners on the main streets don’t like the idea¾they say that if there is less traffic, they will have less business.
The city government has not yet decided what to do. It wants to keep everyone happy. On weekends, Central Park--the largest open space in New York is closed to cars and the roads may be used by bikes only. Television is also called TV. It is one of our most important means of communication. It brings pictures and sounds from around the world into millions of homes. People with a television set can sit at home and watch the President make a speech or “visit” a foreign country. Through television, viewers can see and learn about people, places, and things in faraway lands.
