These days when someone says a computer has a bug in it, usually they mean that there’s a problem with one of its programs.
Bu back in the early days of computers, a woman named Grace Hopper was part of the team that discovered the very first computer bug. As a mathematician, Hopper had been hired by ;the navy to help program the new Mark II computer, whose job was to quickly solve the math problems ships and airplanes used to find their way.
The Mark II worked by reading instructions from a long strip of paper with holes punched(打孔) in it. The computer translated the patterns of holes into the math problems it was supposed to solve.
One afternoon in 1947 Hopper and her team were running a program. But the computer wasn’t giving them the right results. They finally ended up taking the Mrk II apart, looking for problems.
It was the dead moth( 蛾) ! The month was blocking some of the holes on the paper strip---no wonder the computer didn’t know what to do.
Hoper knew that the term ”bug” had been used before when there were problems with machines. But this was the first time a computer had ever had one,. She thought it was funny that it was a real bug. Some people think Hopper was the first person to use the word “ debug” to mean “ get rid of the problems in a computer “.
Grace Hopper worked with computers her whole life and went on to become a rear admiral(海军少将 ) in the U.S. Navy. She was the first person to write a word-based computer language. This makes it easier for people to tell computers what to do. Some people called her “Grandma COBOL “, but to most she was just “Amerazing Grace”.

I do all my shopping on Christmas Eve because I prefer to get it done quickly. I certainly don’t enjoy shopping. It doesn’t matter when I shop----I probably won’t buy gifts that people will want anyway. I just look at what’s for sale and choose from whatever is there. I am never disappointed because I never have any idea what to buy anyone before I get to the shop, and I don’t care about getting it at the best price.
Lucy Collins, 34, from Liverpool
I’ve always finished all my shopping by the middle of August. I buy when things are cheap and when I can afford to . I also enjoy trying to buy as many gifts as possible at less than the full price. This year, I’ve spent £230 and saved£695 on the prices
I think Christmas is a magical time so I like looking for gifts throughout the year.I also like knowing I’ve bought presents that people will enjoy, rather than picking through whatever is left in the shops on Christmas Eve.
Frankie Bircham, 31, from Hertfordshire
I’ve always finished shopping by the end of September. I like the satisfaction of giving people presents they want----I don’t like “ Oh, that’ll do “. It’s cheaper than travelling into London to go shopping and I can easily return anything I don’t like when it arrives.

Mountaineering is one of the most popular sports. It combines mountain hiking and climbing. Sometimes it includes skiing in snow-covered areas. Maybe this sport is so popular because it can be more extreme(极限的 ) or less extreme depending on the difficulty of the mountain you choose to climb. It is a sport that any physically fit person can do,
Mountaineering is often called Alpinism, especially in European languages, which suggests climbing with difficulty such high mountains as the Alps. A mountaineer with such great skill is called an Alkpinist. The word alpinism was born in the 19th century to refer to climbing as a sport.
Rappelling, one form of mountaineering, involves(涉及) tying yourself to a rope and going down a step slope(陡坡). Instead of climbing down with your hands and feet, you actually walk down the slope backwards. It’s certainly a quick and frightening way to get down a mountain, Or, in many case, a waterfall!
The first time I went rappelling was down a mountain waterfall. It was over 70 feet high, and the water rushed over it violently. My guide tied a safety rope to me and sent me over the side of the rushing water, At first, I was terrified and hung on for dear life. But, after a while, I realize that I wouldn’t fall, so I relaxed and began to enjoy it, After all, few people can say they have walked on a waterfall !

Bad news if you’ve got a sweet tooth----eating too many sweets could make you forgetful. Researchers have found that keeping low sugar levels in the blood is good for the brain,The study , published in the journal Neurology, showed people with too much sugar in thir blood were more likely to have memory problems.
Researchers looked at 141 people with an average age of 63 who did not have diabetes( 糖尿病) or pre-diabetes, Those with less sugar in their blood were more likely to score well on memory tests. The researchers found that people with high levels of sugar in their blood were less able to recall a list of 15 words 30 minutes after hearing them. An increase of about seven mmol/mol of a long-term marker of glucose(葡萄糖 ) control called HbA1c( 糖化血红蛋白) went along with remembering two fewer words.
Dr Agnes Floel, of Charite University Hospital in Berlin, said,” These results suggest even for people within the normal range of blood sugar lowering their blood sugar level could be a promising method for preventing memory problems and cognitive decline(认知减退 ) as they age. Methods such as taking in fewer calories and increasing physical activity should be tested.” Volunteers who were overweight, who drank more than three and a half servings
of alcohol per day and who had memory and thinking problems were ruled out before the study started.
The participants’ memory skills were then tested along with their blood glucose levels . Participants also had brain scans to measure the size of their hippocampus(海马体 ). Dr Clare Walton, research communications manager for the Alzheimer’s Society, said, “We already know that type 2 diabetes is a risk factor for developing Alzheimer’s disease, but this new study suggests that higher blood sugar levels may also be linked to poor memory in people without diabetes.”
The research suggests that adjusting blood sugar levels might be a way to improve people’s memory, even if they don’t have diabetes. However, before people without diabetes consider changing their diets or taking medicine, more research is needed to test this theory. One in three people over 65 will develop dementia(痴呆 ) so investing in research like this is vital.
