She liked nothing better than to explore the banks of the Missouri River, where she climbed trees and hunted rats with her rifle (步枪).She also built her own roller coaster(过山车). The exciting life of the American aviation (航空)pioneer is dramatized in the movie Amelia, which is due to come out on October 23. After Earhart paid a pilot $1 to take her up for a short fly in his plane, aviation became her love and career. As she later explained, “Never do things others can do and will do, if there are things others cannot do or will not do.” Earhart found herself a flying teacher and started to learn to fly. She took all sorts of jobs to pay for the lessons and to buy a secondhand plane on her 24th birthday. In 1932, Earhart flew solo (单人的) across the Atlantic. She became the first woman to make the solo crossing. She also made a flying suit for women and went on to design other clothes for women who led active lives. “Now and then women should do for themselves what men have already done—occasionally what men have not done —thereby establishing themselves as persons, and perhaps encouraging other women toward greater independence of thought and action, ”she said. When she was nearly 40, Earhart was ready for a final challenge—to be the first woman to fly around the world. However, in midflight, she and her navigator (导航员) disappeared in bad weather. Earhart will be forever remembered as a brave pioneer for both aviation and women. 11.According to the passage, which of the following statements is true? A. C Chinese media and Internet users on Monday decried(谴责)a lack of morals in society after a child was struck twice by two different trucks and left bleeding on the road as more than a dozen bystanders did nothing to help the seriously injured girl. The incident, captured by a surveillance camera and aired by Southern Television Guangdong (TVS), showed the two-year-old girl was knocked down and run over by a white truck on a narrow market street on the afternoon of Oct. 13, in Foshan City of Guangdong Province. The driver fled the scene of the accident, leaving the girl to bleed on the sidewalk. Over the next six minutes, more than a dozen people walked by the girl, yet not one individual did anything to help her. The girl was then hit a second time by another van before an elderly trash collector came to her aid and brought the attention of the girl’s mother, according to the video and eyewitnesses. Doctors said that the girl, who was put on life support after being hospitalized, remains in a deep coma. The girl's parents, who are migrants living in the city, are now with her. Police said the drivers of both vehicles have been arrested. However, the apathy(冷漠) of the bystanders shown in the video has shocked the public, and people are questioning the morality of society. High moral standards were once considered as national pride in China where individuals known for selflessly helping others were adored by the public. But in recent years, the perception(观念)of a decline of morals has become a hot topic as profit and materialism are perceived to be affecting society’s values. On Sept. 2. an 88-year-old man in central China collapsed, his face striking the pavement. Yet, no one came to his aid, and he ended up choking to death on the blood from his nose. Some have linked the absence of good Samaritans (模范人物)to a previous case in which a man trying to help an elderly woman who fell was accused of harming her. A strong chorus of opinion on the Internet says laws should exempt(免除)Samaritans from liability(责任), yet laws themselves cannot solve society’s morality dilemma. Cao Lin, a China Youth Daily commentator, said in a signed article published on Monday that the worry of liability should not be an excuse for not helping, and this case exposes the decline of humanity in Chinese society. 18. According to the passage, what would happen if someone helped others selflessly in the past? A. He/she would be awarded by the government. B. He/she would have to worry about liability. C. He/she would be condemned by the public. D. The public would feel proud of him/ her and thus showed love and respect for him/ her 19. Which of the following is TRUE about this passage? A. Nobody helped the girl who was struck twice by two different vans. B. The toddler died immediately after she was hit a second time. C. High moral standards were once regarded as national pride in China. D. Journalists from TVS captured the incident by using a camera. 20. In recent years, society’s values is believed to be affected by . A. people’s perceptions B. profit and materialism C. the apathy of bystanders D. the morals of society 21. According to Cao Lin, what is the fundamental reason for not helping the girl? A. The decline of humanity in society. B. Lack of laws that exempt Samaritans from liability. C. The worry of liability. D. The other two cases mentioned in the article-the case or an 88-year-old man and the case where a man trying to help an elderly woman who fell was accused or harming her. D For most people, shopping is still a matter of wandering down the street or loading a cart in a shopping mall. Soon, that will change. Electronic commerce (trade) is growing fast and will soon bring people more choices. There will, however, be a cost: protecting the consumer from being cheated will be harder. Many governments therefore want to apply street regulations to the electronic world. But politicians would be wiser to see cyberspace as a basis for a new era of corporate self-regulation. Consumers in rich countries have grown used to the idea that the government takes responsibility for everything from the stability of the banks to the safety of the drugs or their rights to refund when goods are faulty. But governments cannot enforce national laws on businesses whose only presence is on the screen. Even in a country where a clear right to compensation exists, the on-line customer in Tokyo, say, can hardly go to New York to get a refund (退款) for a clothes purchase. One answer is for government to cooperate more: to recognize each other’s rules. But that requires years of work and volumes of detailed rules. And plenty of countries have rules too fanciful for sober countries to accept. There is, however, another choice. Let the electronic businesses do the regulation themselves. They do, after all, have a self-interest in doing so. In electronic commerce, a reputation for honest dealing will be a valuable competitive asset. Governments, too, may compete to be trusted. For instance, customers ordering medicines on- line may prefer to buy from the United States because they trust the rigorous screening of the Food and Drug Administration; or they may decide that the FDA’s rules are too strict, and buy from Switzerland instead. Customers will still need to use their judgment, but precisely because the technology is new, electronic shoppers are likely for a while to be a lot more cautious than customers of the normal sort. And the new technology will also make it easier for them to complain when a company lets them down. In this way, at least, the advent(出现) of cyberspace may argue for fewer consumer protection laws, not more. 22. In case an electronic shopper bought faulty goods from a foreign country, what could he do? A. Refuse to pay for the purchase. B. Go to the seller and ask for a refund. C. Appeal to consumer protection law. D. Complain about it on the Internet. 23. In the author’s view, businesses would place a high emphasis on honest dealing because in the electronic world _______. A. international cooperation would be much more frequent B. consumers could easily seek government protection C. a good reputation is a great advantage in competition D. it would be easy for consumers to complain 24. We can infer from the passage that in licensing new drugs the FDA in the United States is______. A. very quick B. very cautious C. very slow D. rather careless 25. According to the author, what will be the best policy for electronic commerce? A. Self-regulation by the business. B. Strict Consumer protection laws. C. Close international cooperation. D. Government protection. 书面表达(满分25分)(注意:在试题卷上作答无效) 假设你是李华,前天是你的外国朋友Anne的生日。你本答应要参加她的生日聚会,但你当时正忙着准备期末考试,不小心忘了赴约。请写封信向Anne表达你的歉意,说明原因,并提出补救的方法。 注意:1.词数100词左右; 2.文章中不得出现真实班级和姓名;
