People say that George Washington, the first president of the United States, never told a lie. But it seems that the president was not without faults.
A New York library recently found that Washington borrowed two books from the library in 1789. He didn’t return them. If he were still alive, he would have to pay the library $300,000 for being 220 years late.
On October 5, 1789, when the first president borrowed the books from the New York Society Library, he didn’t sign his name in the borrower’s book. He just wrote “president” to show who had taken them out. The two books should have been brought back a month later but were never returned. Workers at the library realized the books were missing.
The New York Society Library doesn’t expect anyone to pay the fine. But it hopes that someone will return the books.

Long ago most Americans lived on farms. As cities grew, many younger people left the farms for city life. Today most Americans live in towns and cities. They have only heard about cave life. They must like what they have heard, though, because many are now leaving cities and moving back to the open land.
Why do people want to live in the country? They want to grow, store, and cook their own food. They like to work with farm animals. They want clean air, plenty of space, and less rushing around. They want to get to know their families better by working in the fields with them.
Farm life has changed since the early 1900s. Tractors, electricity, and power machines make work easier. Everyone gets up early. Even before the family eats breakfast, some chores are done. The animals are fed, and milking machines are put to work. Animals stalls are cleaned, and eggs are gathered. After breakfast everyone works in the fields. They plant and harvest the crops. Any crops not sent to market are canned or frozen for home use.
There are two main types of farms. The first is a small family—run farm, where several different crops and animals are raised. It is like the one you have just read about. The second kind is a much larger farm and often raises only one special crop or animal.
The very large farms need many workers and sometimes many machines. Crops raised may be grains, vegetables, fruits, or cotton. Animals raised may be cattle, chickens, sheep, or hogs. Would you like to live on a farm?
