二、完形填空(本题共10分,每小题1分)
A boy was walking home from school when he saw a large apple on one of the branches(树枝) of an apple tree hanging out(挂出) over a tall fence. 21 , the boy disliked fruit preferring a bar of chocolate if given the choice. However, as they say, the forbidden(被禁止的) fruit can be attractive(有吸引力的). Seeing the apple, the boy wanted it. The more he looked at it, the 22 he felt and the more he wanted that apple.
He stood on tiptoe(脚尖), 23 as high as he could, but even as his tallest height he was unable to touch it. He began to jump up and down, as high as he could, at the 24 of each jump stretching his arms to get the apple. Still it remained(保持,停留) out of sight .
Not giving up, he thought, if only he had something to 25 on. His school bag wouldn't give enough 26 and he didn't want to break the things inside, like his lunch box, pencil case, and books. Looking 27 ,he hoped he might find an old box, a rock, or, with luck, even a ladder, but it was a tidy neighborhood and there was nothing he could use.
He had tried everything he could think of doing. 28 seeing any other choices, he gave up and started to walk away. At first, he felt angry and disappointed thinking about how hungry he had become from his efforts(努力), and how he really wanted that apple. The more he thought like this, the more unhappy he became.
However, the boy of our story was a pretty smart guy, even if he couldn't always get 29 he wanted. He started to say to himself, "This isn't helpful. I don't have the apple and I'm feeling unhappy as well. There's 30 more I can do to get the apple, which is unchangeable, but we are supposed to be able to change our feelings. If that's the case, what can I do to feel better?"
Sometimes accepting an unchangeable result is a good choice.

Christmas Eve means a warm get-together with friends, a candlelight dinner, or perhaps a celebration at a pub for students. But,for Cai Yingjie, the night has a different meaning: helping beggars and the homeless.
Cai, who is a student at Tsinghua, could be found at Beijing's Wudaokou Light Railway Station that special evening. When she saw an old beggar, she took the cold, rough hands of the woman with her warm, clean hands, and gave the woman some warm bread and helped her put on a pair of new gloves.
The woman was surprised for a few seconds, saying with tears “For the first time I feel respected.”
Cai said, “A beggar's life is very hard. That's why I want to help them.”
Cai was one of 14 Tsinghua students spending Christmas Eve among the poor. They walked in the cold wind along the streets from 4 p.m to 7 p.m. on Friday, visiting 15 beggars in Beijing's Haidian District(区).
They brought bread and gloves with them, and stopped to greet beggars and offer them some of the warm food. Each beggar greeted them with a look of surprise.
“I know the activity can't help much, but it's meant to show our respect and care for beggars and the homeless who have been neglected(被忽视的) for so long,” said Sun,head of the group. “And Christmas is a good time for that.”

A tsunami(海啸) is an extremely large ocean wave.It is usually created by an earthquake on the seafloor and can travel hundreds of or even thousands of miles across the ocean. As the tsunami enters the shallows(浅处) of coastlines on its way, its speed (速度) slows but its height increases.
The biggest local tsunami ever to hit land happened on July 9, 1958, when an earthquake shook the undersea fault(断层) near Lituya Bay, Alaska. The huge earthquake shook 30 million m3 of dirt, rocks, and ice from a mountain at the head of the bay(海湾).The landslide(山体滑坡)fell 3,000 feet and hit the water with great power, which created the extremely huge tsunami wave. The wave was more than 1,640 feet high and covered over five square miles of land, pulling millions of trees out of the ground. There were no towns in the area, so unlike the deadly tsunami of 2004, in which more than 200,000 people in Indonesia and elsewhere were killed, the Lituya Bay tsunami killed two people. They were in a fishing boat in the bay when the wave hit them.Another boat, the Badger, was carrying William Swanson and his wife. The boat rode the w
